The Blog from U.N.C.L.E.
As a kid, I really liked the Girl from UNCLE, and years later I learned the show was actually a spin-off. Who knew? Well, apparently everyone else in the world but me.
1952--TALES OF THE SLAYER VOLUME FOUR--"Undeadsville"--Zoe Kuryakin is the slayer. She mentions having a cousin named Ilya from the Ukraine. Ukrainian Ilya Kuryakin will be an agent of UNCLE.
November 1952--BEWITCHED--"Samantha's French Pastry"--Uncle Arthur accidentally pulls Napoleon from the past. Napoleon has also appeared on THE AVENGERS, THE TIME TUNNEL, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, THE PRISONER, TIME BANDITS, THE NEVER SAY U.N.C.L.E. AFFAIR, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, and BLACKADDER: BACK AND FORTH.
1964 to 1968--THE MAN FROM UNCLE--Two spies do spy stuff.
February 1965--THE MAN FROM UNCLE--"The Bow Wow Affair"--Guido Panzini appears. Guido Panzini is a fictional character, the creation of comedian Pat Harrington Junior. He also appears on a lot of comedy-variety shows, but also appears on McHale's Navy and One Day at a time. This character fits in a certain category of fictional characters that are involved in crossovers, even though they might not have a series of their own. Others in this type of category include Jose Jiminez, Father Guido Sarducci, Elvira, and Pee Wee Herman.
January 1966--PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISY--"Say UNCLE"--The kids see their dad talking with Ilya Kuryakin and start suspecting that their father is a spy. Apparently there was also a later cross with the Girl from UNCLE.
1966--THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. NUMBER 6 THE VAMPIRE AFFAIR (NOVEL BY DAVID MCDANIEL)--In Romania, U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin encounter the legendary Dracula. The book indeed brings in the television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. into the Television Crossover Universe, but it only brings in the original series, and any other appearances that may get mentioned in this blog. Though there are several versions of Dracula flying around the TVCU, I felt that this was probably meant to be the original, and thus made that call. I should also point out that the agents also meet Forrest J. Ackerman. This isn’t a cross, since Uncle Forry is a real person, but I had to throw it in there.
1966 to 1967--THE GIRL FROM UNCLE--A girl spy does girl spy stuff.
September 1966--THE GIRL FROM UNCLE--"The Mother Muffin Affair"--Napoleon Solo appears.
September 1966--THE MAN FROM UNCLE--"The Galatea Affair"--Mark Slate (from THE GIRL FROM UNCLE) appears.
February 1967--THE MAN FROM UNCLE--"The Pieces of Fate Affair"--April Dancer is mentioned.
April 1967--THE FUGITIVE--"The Walls of Night"--Dr. Richard Kimble passes Del Floria's Tailor Shop. However, he is in Seattle, and the shop should be in New York, as that is the setting for THE MAN FROM UNCLE. But not necessarily. UNCLE was a global operation, and likely they have fronts worldwide. Someday they will even have one on a space station orbiting the planet Bajor.
May 1967--THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.--"The Rainbow Affair"--U.N.C.L.E. agents Solo and Kuryakin meet Steed and Peel of THE AVENGERS, as well as Inspector Roger West, Sir Denis Nayland Smith, Fu Manchu, Simon Templar (aka The Saint), Miss Marple, Father Brown, and Sherlock Holmes (aka William Escott). James Bond is also referenced, along with an enemy of the Saint. Also this book reveals that Department Z founded U.N.C.L.E. For more information on The Avengers and an episode guide, see The Complete Avengers, by Dave Rogers, St. Martin's Press, 1989.
1967--THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. NUMBER 11 THE INVISIBILITY AFFAIR (NOVEL BY THOMAS STRATTON)--A case involving an invisibility machine. The scientist and his niece who are working on the device are named Griffin, a nod to the original Invisible Man, and in my opinion, intended to be a crossover. How Ms. Kerry Griffin and her uncle fit into the family tree is not something I’m concerned with. I’m sure there’s an implied relationship of some sort, and the creation of a valid crossover is enough for me. However, Dennis E. Power went a step further and linked all the Invisible Men, connected them and placed them on a family tree. You can find this on his website.
February 1968--THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.--"The Power Cube Affair"--Solo and Kuryakin of U.N.C.L.E. meet Charles, the former head of the AVENGERS.
April 1966--GET SMART--"The Reluctant Redhead"--Grobnik the KAOS killer formerly worked for THRUSH, UNCLE's arch enemy.
1969--THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. NUMBER 17 THE HOLLOW CROWN AFFAIR (NOVEL BY DAVID MCDANIEL)--A mission brings our favorite agents Solo and Kuryakin to Collinsport, Maine. Collinsport, Maine is the setting of the dark soap opera Dark Shadows. Sheriff Patterson from the series appears, and on a tree is spotted a carving that reads “Barnabas loves Josette”, likely there since the 1700s. The love story between Barnabas and Josette was a major plotline in Barnabas’ curse as a vampire. Incidentally, if you get nothing else from this book, I hope you’ve at least learned to stay out of Maine.
July 16 - 19, 1969--SUBTERRANEAN “MOON MOON MOON” (NOVELLA BY KIM NEWMAN)--Was there some sort of occult connection to the Apollo 11 moon landing? Richard Jeperson of the Diogenes Club will work with the FBI’s Unnameables Section to find out. The Diogenes Club originates from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, but has more recently had a “spin-off” series created by Kim Newman. One member of the club is the Bishop of Brichester. Brichester is from Ramsey Campbell’s continuation of the Cthulhu Mythos. Kate Reed is another member of the club. She was a character who was created by Bram Stoker for Dracula but her scene was later removed before publication. Edwin Winthrop and Genevieve Dieudonne are also members. Reed, Winthrop and Dieudonne all appeared in Newman’s Anno Dracula series, which is an alternate universe where the timeline diverged during the events of Dracula. The Anno Dracula must be a divergent timeline of the Television Crossover Universe, and these three appearing in this story are the counterparts of this main TVCU timeline. The Department of Queer Complaints is mentioned, which is from the series of the same name by Carter Dickson. Besides the Diogenes Club and the members who have counterparts in the Anno Dracula Universe, there are several other crossovers scattered within the story that connect this story to other Newman stories, which is typical of a Newman story. One character in the story is referred to as the “girl from A.U.N.T.I.E”, which at the very least is meant to be a sarcastic reference to the agency U.N.C.L.E. and the the spin-off of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. called The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. Additionally, there was an episode of the Avengers entitled The Girl from A.U.N.T.I.E. where A.U.N.T.I.E. was meant to actually be U.N.C.L.E. but changed to avoid real world copyright infringement. Thus, in this story, A.U.N.T.I.E. may actually mean U.N.C.L.E. as a nod to the Avengers. During the tale, Cavorite is mentioned as a possible alternative to rocketry for visiting the moon, a reference that makes the events of H.G. Wells’ The First Men in the Moon as real for the Television Crossover Universe. A magic portal to the moon is compared to other real portals to Wonderland and Narnia. That would mean that the Earth events of Alice in Wonderland and the Chronicles of Narnia were the Earth of the Television Crossover Universe, and Wonderland and Narnia are magical pocket dimensions connection to the TVCU. Also mentioned are Count Cagliostro and Cordwainer Bird, who are not counted as crossovers. Both are fictionalized versions of real people. Of course, Cagliostro is a vampire in the TVCU. Bird is the alias used by author Harlan Ellison.
1973--THE NIGHT STALKER (NOVEL BY JEFF RICE)--Kolchak is a Vegas reporter who gets assigned the police beat and soon finds himself investigating a series of murders that seems is if they were the work of a vampire. This novel is the first appearance of Carl Kolchak that was later made into a TV movie that served as the pilot for the television series. Some books that are listed in this book as being real are David McDaniel’s the Vampire Affair (as in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), W.S. Baring-Gould’s biography Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, The Whole Art of Detection (by Sherlock Holmes), and Ellery Queen’s A Study in Terror.
1983--THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.--"The Fifteen Years Later Affair"--Sir John Raleigh, the new head of U.N.C.L.E.'s New York headquarters, bears an uncanny resemblance to John Steed of The Avengers. James Bond also appears, meeting with Solo.
October 1986--THE A-TEAM--"The Say U.N.C.L.E. Affair"--In season 5, the A-Team are captured, tried, convicted, and to the public, executed. However, General Hunt Stockwell in reality saves them and puts them to work for him. Stockwell is played by Robert Vaughn, who played UNCLE Agent Napoleon Solo. Usually I don't prescribe to same actor theory, except when there are strong in-story inferences. This episode provides two elements that might imply that Stockwell is an alias for Solo (or vice versa). First, note the episode title. Second, the story involves Stockwell being contacted by his old partner, Ivan Tregorin, who is played by David McCallum, who also played UNCLE Agent Ilya Kuryakin.
October to November 1987--THE PRISONER: SHATTERED VISAGE--A retired agent is sent to the Village, which is weird. They send her to the abandoned one that is no longer operational. And John Drake is there. He must have escaped the new one and returned to the old one. Apparently the psychological torture and brainwashing has really messed him up. John Steed and Emma Peel of THE AVENGERS are seen attending a funeral back in England, and they mention agent GEORGE SMILEY. At this point, Steed has taken a new alias as Sir John Raleigh and is now running things as a MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
1988--CLUE??--A multitude of familiar spies, secret agents and detectives are gathered together in a remote country mansion for mysterious reasons. The going gets rough when they begin dying one by one... Featuring COLUMBO, MIKE HAMMER, IRONSIDE, NANCY DREW, April Dancer (THE GIRL FROM UNCLE), THE HARDY BOYS, and JAMES BOND.
February 1989--GET SMART, AGAIN!--99 mentions THRUSH in connection with Gruvnik the Spoiler
September 1996 to February 1997--MARRIED WITH CHILDREN--"Damn Bundys"--Al Bundy makes a deal with the Devil to play in the NFL, but on the day of the Super Bowl, the Devil comes to collect Al's soul, and sentences him to an eternity of spending time only with his family and his neighbors, the D'Arcys. Napoleon also appears. Napoleon has also appeared on THE AVENGERS, THE TIME TUNNEL, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, THE PRISONER, TIME BANDITS, THE NEVER SAY U.N.C.L.E. AFFAIR, BEWITCHED, and BLACKADDER: BACK AND FORTH.
March 3, 1997--SPY GAME--"Why Spy?"--From Toby O'Brien: Patrick Macnee and Peter Lupus in the pilot episode of 'Spy Game'. It's suggested that as retired spies, they're appearing as John Steed and Willie Armitage (of 'The Avengers' and 'Mission: Impossible', respectively). Brad Mengel added: Hi Robert, There's this Mr Black (Steed) and Mr White (Willy Armitage) report the death of an agent to E.C.H.O. (Emergency Counter Hostilities Organisation) which causes the pairing of Lorne Cash and Max London. Kelly Robinson is seen at the end of the episode threatening to blow up Statue of Liberty in what is probably a training exercise E.C.H.O is later revealed to have their headquarters in the old U.N.C.L.E. headquarters under Del Florino's tailor shop which the agents call Uncle Solo's (Why Spy? -SPY GAME TV series 1997). So Spy Game connects The Avengers, Mission: Impossible and The Man and The Girl from UNCLE and possibly I Spy. Brad
1997--CONSPIRACY THEORY--There are reference in this film that refer to THE MAN FROM UNCLE, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, and I LOVE LUCY as being real within the context of the film's reality.
February 2005--NCIS--"The Meat Puzzle"--Gibbs says that Ducky used to look like Ilya Kuryakin when he was young. In fact, Ducky is played by David McCallum, who played Ilya Kuryakin.
November 2008 - July 2011--BLACK MAGIC WOMAN/EVIL WAYS/SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL (NOVELS BY JUSTIN GUSTAINIS)--Quincy Morris, the great grandson of the character from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is an occult investigator, partnered with his consultant, the white witch LIbby Chastain. Morris & Chastain Investigations is brought into the Television Crossover Universe due to its large number of crossovers with series already in the TVCU. As stated above, the main character is descended from a primary character in Dracula, and there are several other references to characters and events from that novel. In one scene, Quincy is called in to a town previously visited by vampire hunters who used tow trucks to pull vampires out into the sunlight. This is a reference to the events of the novel Vampire$, later made into the film John Carpenter’s Vampires. Anita Blake is mentioned as an expert on vampires. Blake’s series takes place in a world where vampires are public knowledge, likely the same divergent timeline as the Buffy Season 8 comics. However, just because she exists there, doesn’t mean she can’t also exist in an altered form in the main TVCU timeline. Diana Tregarde is also mentioned as an expert. She is a fictional character in her own series of novels. Carnacki is the name of Quincy’s pet hamster, and I could presume the pet is named for a fictional character were it not for all the other strong crossover references placing this series in the Television Crossover Universe and confirming Quincy Morris’ extensive knowledge of the paranormal community and other investigators. Quincy states that he has been in the home where the events of the Exorcist happen. He has also been involved in investigating the homes from The Amityville Horror and the Haunted. Though those two were based on real events allegedly, the films are so altered and dramatized (and in the case of Amityville, extended with fictional sequels and prequels), that I presume that the references are to the fictional film versions and not the true life cases. At one point, the heroes pass the Del Floria’s Tailor Shop, a front for UNCLE. Quincy notes the books collected on another occult investigator’s shelves. Some are real works like the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita, but there are others that link to other series. Stone’s Practical Demon Hunting is a book that is a reference to the main character of Brimstone, in which a man who had murdered his wife’s rapist is returned to Earth by the devil to reclaim the souls of several escapees from Hell. Kim Newman’s The Vampire in Victorian England is in the collection. Though this is a non-fiction work, Kim Newman’s fiction has a strong presence in the Television Crossover Universe. Wellman’s Biography of John the Balladeer is a reference to a mid-20th century singer who travels the mountainous region of the United States encountering many local supernatural legends. Two final books in the collection link to the X-Files and Millenium. They are Scully and Reyes’ Investigating the Occult: Principles and Techniques, 3rd Edition and Black’s Approaching the Millenium.
October 2012--NCIS--"Phoenix"--Ducky's saying, "La fin de l'affaire," was a subtle reference to each episode being referred to as an "affair".
2269 A.D.--ASSIGNMENT: ETERNITY (NOVEL BY GREG COX)--Gary Seven and his partner Roberta Lincoln travel from the year 1969 to the 23rd century and once more encounter the crew of the Enterprise, commanded by Captain James T. Kirk. This novel is a sequel to the Star Trek episode Assignment Earth, which introduced Gary Seven in what was meant to be a pilot for his own series. Gary and his assistant mention having knowledge of the people or events from all of the following crosses: Kolchak the Night Stalker; The Avengers (television); The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.; The Questor Tapes; Mission Impossible; James Bond; The Prisoner; and The Andromeda Strain.
24th century--STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE--On DS9, there are many establishments. One of these is Del Floria's Tailor Shop. In the 20th century, on Earth, this was the secret headquarters for UNCLE. Apparently by the 24th century, the spy agency is still in business and has either moved or expanded.
