DID I DO THAT? YOU GOT IT, DUDE! TGIF IN THE TVCU

TGIF stands for Thank God It's Friday traditionally, but from 1988 to 2000, it stood for Thank Goodness It's Funny.  During those years, ABC had a Friday night block of programming from 8PM to 10PM that was family oriented programming, and admittedly, my family was in that market audience.  Some of these programs crossed with each other, and at least one crosses into the greater Television Crossover Universe, pulling all other other shows in with it.  Have Mercy!

Since not all of the shows from TGIF have crossed, I'm not going with an automatic presumption that they are in.  This blog will only cover TGIF shows that have valid connection to the TVCU, by starting with Perfect Strangers (which is brought in via a cross with Happy Days), and from there, Perfect Strangers connects to Family Matters, the show that, God help us, introduced Steve Urkel, the crossover glue of the TGIF TVCU.

Summer 1983--GHOSTBUSTERS--Paranormal research scientists Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, and Peter Venkman lose their research grant and are forced off the campus they were working.  Peter convinces Ray to mortgage his family home to fund the creation of the Ghostbusters.  The Ghostbusters become very successful.  They hire a secretary, Janine Melnitz, and a new Ghostbuster, Winston Zeddemore.  One of their clients, whom Peter has fallen for, Dana Barrett, and her neighbor, accountant/lawyer Louis Tully are possessed and raise the god called Gozer.  The Ghostbusters save the day and the possessed clients.  Note that there is a lot of speculation that the jail guard in this film is Carl Winslow of FAMILY MATTERS, who is a cop in Chicago.  OK, sometimes cops get lent out to other units in other cities, but it's not common, and very uncommon for beat cops like Carl.  I'll leave this one as questionable, but at least mention it since Family Matters is already in the TVCU through other connections.  In a deleted scene from Ghostbusters, Murray and Ackroyd also play two homeless guys. Murray's homeless guy seems to be his groundskeeper character from Caddyshack, though he has played this similar type of role for various SNL sketches and likely back in the lampoon days as well.







1986 to 1993--PERFECT STRANGERS--Chicago journalist Larry finds out he has a foreign cousin named Balki, who comes to America to live.  The two have many great misadventures.






1987 to 1995--FULL HOUSE--After his wife dies, Danny Tanner gets help from his best friend and brother-in-law to raise his three daughters.

January 1989--MAMA'S FAMILY--"Full House"--This episode reference FULL HOUSE.  There are a log of Full House zonks to deal with in the TVCU. One might consider that Danny was a talk show host in San Francisco, Joey was a stand-up comedian, and Jessie was a professional musician.  So between the three of them, they could have had enough moderate success that perhaps their unusual family dynamic became well known.  Perhaps Wake UP San Francisco had a recurring segment on the show called "Full House" about the family's adventures. It wasn't unusual for the family to show up on the show.  So between the three semi-famous careers of the men of the house, this could perhaps cover the zonks.  Other shows that have had Full House zonks include:  CLARISSA EXPLAINS IT ALL, HOME IMPROVEMENT, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000, THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW, BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD, BOY MEETS WORLD, THE CRITIC, THE NANNY, SOUTH PARK, LEISURE SUIT LARRY, ENTOURAGE, CHARMED, GILMORE GIRLS, HANNAH MONTANA, THE ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD, ICARLY, FAMILY GUY, GETAWAY, GREEK, THE NOSTALGIA CRITIC, THE CINEMA SNOB, LAST MAN STANDING, AMERICAN DAD!, I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER, HOUSE M.D., GLEE, KENDRA ON TOP, NEW GIRL, STUDIO C, THE SIMPSONS, JAMES & MIKE PLAY, WORKAHOLICS, ACTION, and ROSEANNE.

February 1989--PERFECT STRANGERS--"Games People Play"--The bumbling cousins appear on a game show with a prize donated by Cunningham Hardware Store out of Milwaukee.  This is the store that in the 1950s and 1960s was owned by Howard Cunningham on HAPPY DAYS.  Click here for more on this.



February 1989--PERFECT STRANGERS--"Come Fly With Me"--Larry and Balki are on a flight piloted by a Captain Hogan.  There is speculation that his may be the same Captain Hogan from THE HOGAN FAMILY.  Click here for more on this.  



1989--THE ALL NEW MICKEY MOUSE CLUB--"Guest Day"--Comedian Joey Gladstone (from FULL HOUSE) gets a gig on the ALL NEW MICKEY MOUSE CLUB.  Talk show host Danny and his daughter D.J. Tanner come along.






1989 to 1993--FAMILY MATTERS--On Perfect Strangers, the bumbling cousins Larry and Balki worked for a newspaper that had an elevator operator, Harriette Winslow.  But it turned out that Harriette had a life outside of the elevator.  So she got her own show, with her husband Carl, the police officer, and their large family.  And the show was pretty boring and had low ratings, until Steve Urkel was introduced.  I hate to use this analogy, but Steve was the Fonzie of the show.  On Happy Days, the show was about Richie and his family and friends and the show was kind of lacking.  Then they introduced a minor supporting character, who was meant to only be an occasionally recurring character.  That was Arthur Fonzerelli, who in short time became the star of the show.  So was the same with Steve Urkel.  Steve was an uber nerd in a way that offends real nerds like myself.  He had his stereotype and his catchphrases and the show introduced all kinds of comedic sci-fi elements that kind of were a stretch from the early beginnings of the show.  Steve crossed over a lot with other shows because of his popularity.  And he overshadowed the Winslows so much that some of the children on the show started to go the way of Chuck Cunningham and just vanished with no explanation.  More specifically, from Toby O'Brien regarding the missing characters:  Judy Winslow (Jaimee Foxworth) disappears in the fourth season. She was last seen at Mama Winslow's wedding.  Bryton McClure, who played Richie Crawford, Rachael's son, appeared less and less once the character of 3J was introduced. By the last season, his character was completely dropped with no explanation.




1990 to 2001--ABC TGIF--In between the shows were little short segments featuring characters from the various TGIF characters.  For the most part, the characters stayed in character, and the shows didn't really interact with each other during these bits.  However, the oddness was that the bits usually involved the characters from these shows watching TGIF. Thus, you might see Steve and Laura of Family Matters talking about how cute Michelle is on Full House, or Sabrina the Teenage Witch talking about Boy Meets World.  And sometimes they would even talk about their own shows.  So, for that reason, I'm including this, but take this one as apocryphal.  

January 1991--FULL HOUSE--"Stephanie Gets Framed"--When Stephanie has to get glasses (back in the old days before electronic devices forced all children to need them), she feels like a nerd (because only nerds had glasses back in those days).  But then she gets a pep talk that makes her feel better about herself from FAMILY MATTER's Steve Urkel, who has come from his native Chicago to San Francisco to visit his cousin, who happens to be D.J.'s friend...for this one episode.



March 1991--GROWING PAINS--"Meet the Seavers"--Steve Urkel is mentioned twice as a fictional character, despite existing in the same universe as this series.  Zonk?  Sure, but I think we can get around it.  Consider that Urkel is a super-genius, creating inventions that rival those of other super-geniuses like Reed Richards.  Even if he still lives in a simple Chicago neighborhood and chooses to stay in public school, he clearly would be a public figure.

1991--THE ABC SATURDAY MORNING PREVIEW--Steve, Carl and Laura of FAMILY MATTERS talk about the new ABC Saturday morning line-up.  Unlike a lot of these cartoon preview shows, in this case, the Family Matters cast don't actually interact with the cartoons nor refer to them as real.



1991 to 1998--STEP BY STEP--In a modern Brady Bunch kind of way, a single mom marries a single dad, and the kids don't get along.  This show and Family Matters would actually change to CBS in 1996, where they would be part of the short lived Saturday version of TGIF.  STEP BY STEP has also been zonked on other shows.  Likely the title is not a reference to this specific family as it is a pretty generic name.  Shows that it has been referenced on include:  SOUTH PARK, WILL & GRACE, and PSYCH.  Toby adds from the Toobworld site:  The youngest Lambert boy on the show, Brendan, saw his role reduced during the last few years of the show (especially after the birth of Lilly) until he was completely dropped from the show during the last season without explanation.

September 1991--STEP BY STEP--"The Dance"--This one was kind of a neat set-up for the crossover.  Just before this episode was an episode of Family Matters.  At the end of the episode, Steve Urkel flies off on his newly created (and not yet fully tested) jet pack, and out of control, flies out of Chicago.  Run credits.  Cut to the next show, Step by Step, which begins in their Port Washington, Wisconsin, and Steve crashing into their yard.  Though the two shows had unrelated plots, they get connected by the closing and opening scenes of these shows.  (If I recall, Drew Carey and Home Improvement did something similar at some point.)

March 1992--PARKER LEWIS CAN'T LOSE--"When Jerry Met Shelly"--Shelly has a Steve Urkel doll, supporting the notion that Urkel being a super-genius has made him a public figure.  Other shows that mention Family Matters or Steve Urkel are BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, HANGIN' WITH MR. 1992 to 1997--HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER--Mark Cooper is a former professional basketball player now working as a gym teacher in Oakland where he lives with the lovely Robin and Vanessa.  Like other TGIF shows and TVCU shows in general, this one also gets referenced a lot as fiction.  I suppose we could consider since he was in the NBA, Mark Cooper might have had enough fame, and perhaps "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" was the name of a documentary about his transition from the NBA to teaching.  Other shows that have referenced HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER as fictional include:  MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000, SOMETHING WILDER, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, SLIDERS, THE DREW CAREY SHOW, and HOUSE OF CARTERS.



September 1992--HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER--"The Presentation"--APOCRYPHAL OR TVCU2--Mark Cooper moves in with his friends Robin and Vanessa, into a house on Long Island that they have purchased from the Seavers of GROWING PAINS.  Why this is not in the main TVCU timeline is twofold.  First, HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER takes place in California.  Secondly, GROWING PAINS will later have reunions where they still own that house.  This pilot episode of HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER tried this cute cameo crossover.  Since they were indeed using the same set, it was funny to have Dr. Jason Seaver show up to talk about it being his old house.  However, the scene was a bit tongue in cheek with the actors only partially in character and seemingly knowing they are living in a fictional world.  

September 1992--HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER--"Hangin' with Michelle"--Cooper lived in Southern California and Michelle Tanner (on Full House) lived in Northern California, but somehow Mr. Cooper had to substitute teach Michelle's class for one day.  Sorry, that's the best I can remember it, and IMDB is not very helpful here.



1993 to 2000--BOY MEETS WORLD--Young Cory has a crush on Topanga, the prettiest girl in school, and that's really all you need to know.

December 1993--HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER--"Private School"--Mr. Cooper says "There's more to our history than just the Fresh Prince and Urkel."  Mr. Cooper has met Michelle Tanner (from Full House), who has met Urkel.  That's just two degrees of connectivity, and yet he makes that statement.  This is a strong basis for my concept that Urkel was actually pretty famous for being a super-genius.  Likewise, I've already established that Will Smith is in the TVCU as seen on the FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIRE.  So even though he was just an ordinary high school kid and not a super pop star at this time in the TVCU, he must have at least had some notoriety with his music.

December 1993--FAMILY MATTERS--"Christmas Is Where the Heart Is"--Santa appears.

1995—Weird Science—“Community Property”--This episode of Weird Science is the first appearance of Gary Bullock in the role of Abraham Lincoln, a role he would reprise in twice each in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Teen Angel. I am treating all of Bullock’s appearances as the president as crossovers; Weird Science and Sabrina are already in the TVCU, thus only Teen Angel is brought into the TVCU by Bullock’s Lincoln.--James Bojaciuk

November 1995--THE SIMPSONS--"Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming"--Steve Urkel is seen working as a television network executive.  

May 1996--BOY MEETS WORLD--"The Happiest Show on Earth"--First, I should mention that a half hour before this show first aired, the family from STEP BY STEP were visiting Disney World.  Now, cut to this episode, and Topanga goes to Disney World, as a perfectly fine stalker, Cory follows her there.  While there, Cory runs into Dana from STEP BY STEP, because, as we saw a half hour earlier, she was already there.  Dana doesn't figure into the main plot so much.  It just happens that they are both there at the same time.  Disney had just bought ABC thus this cool crossover that also serves to promote Disney.  But as Thom Holbrook, the master of crossover groupings has pointed out on his Poobala website, this minor crossover is actually huge to us crossoverists, as it links together two generations of TGIF:  the original tied together mostly by Urkel appearances and the next generation, tied together by events, particularly Salem running through everyone's shows. BOY MEETS WORLD has also been zonked on other shows, including:  MAYBE THIS TIME, SABRINA THE ANIMATED SERIES, VERONICA MARS, THE SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, THE VENTURE BROS., THE NOSTALGIA CRITIC, PORTLANDIA, and THE OFFICE.  Note also that a lot of shows like to make a nod towards this series by mentioning having a teacher named Mr. Feeny, but it's really unlikely it's the same one, unless before and after this series the guy was actually really poor at holding a job and had to keep moving around, since not all these mentions are in shows with the same setting.



1997 to 1998--YOU WISH--A single mother reluctantly accepts the services of a genie who's been imprisoned in a magic carpet for 2,000 years.



1997 to 1998--TEEN ANGEL--After eating a six month old hamburger, Marty DePolo dies and God's Cousin Rod appoints him as his best friend's guardian angel.

September 1997--MEEGO--"Love and Money"--Meego is an alien who works as a nanny for this nice Earth family.  And then Steve Urkel shows up and visits, mainly because Family Matters and Step by Step changed from ABC to CBS, and were used to create a CBS version of TGIF that included this new series Meego.

September 1997--STEP BY STEP--"A Star is Born"--Steve Urkel appears again.  This year both Family Matters and Steve Urkel left ABC and have become part of a Saturday CBS version of ABC's TGIF.

1997—Teen Angel—“Honest Abe and Popular Steve” and “Who’s the Boss”--From Wikipedia, “Teen Angel follows a high school boy, Steve Beauchamp (Corbin Allred), and his recently-deceased best friend, Marty DePolo, (Mike Damus) who, after dying from eating a six-month-old hamburger from under Steve's bed on a dare, hangs around as a kind of dimwitted guardian angel to Allred's character. Ron Glass played God's cousin, Rod. Maureen McCormick, who played Steve's mother, Judy, left the series halfway through its run.”  I include this show on the basis of Gary Bollock’s portrayal of Abraham Lincoln. I’m inclined to treat his Lincoln, which appeared on a number of 1990s television sitcoms, as a crossover of sorts. Thus the inclusion of Teen Angel in the TVCU. It is highly unlikely that Rod is God’s cousin, however; more likely he’s an angel who knew that if he didn’t give himself a highly inflated resume, the dimwitted Marty and Steve would have ignored him. Per Wikipedia, in the episode “Honest Abe and Popular Steve,” “Marty starts bringing in historical figures to help Steve with his life (Abraham Lincoln to write his history papers, Cleopatra to give him love advice so he can date Homecoming Queen Amy Kosover, Pablo Picasso to design "Steve for Class President" campaign posters, etc.) Rod decides that since Marty has done such a good job with Steve that it's time for him to move on to famous jerk rock star, Sammy Noah (Dee Snider).”  In “Who’s the Boss” Marty and Steve throw a birthday party, inviting both cute girls and famous dead people—among them (the famous dead dudes, not the cute girls) Abraham Lincoln. After his journeys with Bill and Ted, Lincoln has come to love a good party!--James Bojaciuk

October 1997--BOY MEETS WORLD--"The Witches of Pennbrook"--Erik is temporarily dating Sabrina Spellman under unexplained circumstances in this episode that centers around a witch coven.  

November 1997--SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH--"Inna-Gadda-Sabrina"/BOY MEETS WORLD--"No Guts, No Cory"/YOU WISH--"Genie without a Cause"/TEEN ANGEL--"One Dog Night"--So Salem the cat swallows a time ball that created a divergent timeline, and then travels to the locations of the other three shows and does the same thing.  Note that I plan on giving Sabrina her own blog, which will cover the comics, cartoons, and live action shows and films.  So she is only mentioned here in regards to her TGIF crossovers but her many other crossovers will not be discussed until a later blog.  Unless Salem runs through my living room right now will a belly full of time ball.  ......  Nope, guess it'll wait until later.

December 1997--STEP BY STEP--"Too Many Santas"--Santa appears.

December 2002--THE SIMPSONS--"Helter Shelter"--There is a Steve Urkel cereal called "Urkel-O's".

February 2003--BE MY VALENTINE, FRANNY CANADA--This short also features the Steve Urkel breakfast cereal "Urkel-O's", which was first seen on the Simpsons.

June 2012--IT'S F*CKIN' LATE WITH DAVE COULIER--Kimmy Gibbler, best friend of D.J. Tanner (from FULL HOUSE) APPEARS.

November 2012--AMERICAN DAD!--"American Stepdad"--Jesse from FULL HOUSE appears.

2014 to Present--GIRL MEETS WORLD--SPIN-OFF OF BOY MEETS WORLD!!!  A decade after "Boy Meets World," Cory and Topanga Matthews are married and have two children. The younger child, a daughter named Riley, faces life lessons through her family, friends, and school, as her parents did when they were younger.

ALTERNATE REALITIES:

CINEMULTIVERSE--In the reality of the film UNDERCOVER BROTHER, Family Matters is just a television show, as it can be seen on TV in one scene.  other movies where Urkel is mentioned as fictional are F.A.R.T.:  THE MOVIE, SISTER ACT 2:  BACK IN THE HABIT, PROBLEM CHILD, ABOVE THE RIM, BLANKMAN, CHASING AMY, TROJAN WAR, CAN'T HARDLY WAIT, KILLER FLICK, THE BREAKS, THE WOOD, BIG FAT LIAR, TWO DAYS, LOVE DON'T COST A THING, THE BENCHWARMERS, THE EX, I COULD NEVER BE YOUR WOMAN, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT, and LOVE & BASKETBALL. EARTH-12--On JUSTICE LEAGUE episode "Kid Stuff", the team are turned into children.  Green Lantern John Stewart as a kid tries to make a disguise and ends up looking like Steve Urkel.

JIMMY FALLON TVCU/TOOBWORLD--I think that the Jimmy Fallon show, and it's sketches, belong to a realty that is not exactly Skitlandia but not the main TVCU nor Toobworld.  Jimmy crosses over with a lot of famed fictional characters, usually from television history.  Relevant to this blog is that Jimmy seems to be the son of Danny Tanner of FULL HOUSE.




LOONIVERSE--Steve Urkel appears on ANIMANIACS episode "Taming of the Screwy".  He is not voiced by Family Matters actor Jaleel White, but instead by Rob Paulsen.  Urkel gets a lot of other references on ANIMANIACS.  Urkel also appears in Tiny Toon Adventures:  How I Spent My Summer Vacation and It's a Wonderful Tiny Toons Christmas Special.  TINY TOON ADVENTURES and PINKY AND THE BRAIN have also referenced FULL HOUSE.

MAD--In this reality is Mad Magazine and the Mad animated show (and perhaps some part of the old Mad TV sketch comedy.)  It's brought in by an episode of Batman:  the Brave and the Bold.  One episode of the animated series references Urkel as a product of the 1980s.

PROMOVERSE--In the Promoverse, John Stamos loves his yogurt and his ladies, and lives with his Full House cast mates who seem to maintain some of their Full House characteristics.  




ROBOT CHICKEN UNIVERSE--IN ROBOT CHICKEN EPISODE "Chirlaxx", Balki makes a cameo appearance.  ROBOT CHICKEN HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO BE PART OF THE TELEVISION CROSSOVER MULTIVERSE IN THE FAMILY GUY EPISODE, "ROAD TO THE MULTIVERSE".  Steve Urkel is mentioned in other episodes.

SKITLANDIA--On the Saturday Night Live episode hosted by Drake, Family Matters is included in a sketch about young rappers who played in 1990s children's sitcoms.  Eddie Winslow is played in the sketch by Jay Pharoah.  In a 1991 episode hosted by Michael J. Fox, there is an America's Most Wanted segment on former child stars, in which Jaleel White is mentioned.  Plenty of other episodes also reference Steve Urkel and Family Matters.  SNL has also referenced Full House.

FROM 1985 TO 1988, THERE WAS A PREVIOUS BLOCKING OF FAMILY ORIENTED SITCOMS ON ABC THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A PRECURSOR TO TGIF.  HOWEVER, FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS BLOG I'M ONLY CONSIDERING THE THE CLASSIC TGIF, WHICH WAS THE BLOCK OF PROGRAMMING ON ABC FRIDAY NIGHTS FROM 8 TO 10 PM FROM 1988 TO 2000.

TGIF DID HAVE A COMEBACK THAT RAN FROM 2003 TO 2005, BUT IT REALLY WASN'T THE SAME.  IT SUFFERED FROM THE LACK OF INTERCONNECTEDNESS.  WHERE WERE THE CAMEOS?  WHERE WHERE THE GIMMICK EVENTS?  THEN FROM 2012 TO 2014, THERE WAS THE SON OF TGIF, CALLED ABC COMEDY FRIDAY.  AGAIN, JUST NOT THE SAME.
