L'autre jour, j'ai posté une chronologie Judex. Une autre série française de cette même époque qui a donné naissance à de nombreux croisements est le sujet du post d'aujourd'hui, Les Vampires. J'ai découvert beaucoup de ces croisements, dont beaucoup découlent de Contes de Black Coat du Shadowmen, tout en écrivant mon Horror Crossover Encyclopedia.

The Story: In 1888, during the events of Bram Stoker’s novel, events diverge and Dracula marries Queen Victoria, causing a major alteration in the socio-political world for the next 125 years and beyond.

Notes: This is a divergent timeline, but not a parallel universe. In my theory, a parallel universe is created at the dawn of time at the same time as the main universe and other parallel universes. They may evolve similarly, but they are separate. Meanwhile, each universe has a main timeline, and at each moment, there are an infinite number of divergent timelines created off of the main timeline. When thinking of divergent timelines, try picturing a fork in the road. Both paths lead in different directions, but they both start at the same point, and once were the same road. The Anno Dracula timeline has shown to be an alternate timeline of the main Horror Universe in several other entries in this reference guide. Because it’s a divergent timeline, the above horror crosses, though depicted in an alternate manner, should still count for inclusions in the Horror Universe. Some of the above crossed series are already in, and the others are brought in via this crossover series despite being an alternate timeline series. The Story: Dracula finds a mate, who then goes about finding three brides of her own.

Notes: Rick Lai does an excellent job of explaining why different vampire stories seem to have different rules regarding the abilities and weaknesses of vampires. He also shows how those who worship Dracula are part of the Cult of the Undead, which has its roots in the Lovecraft mythos. His inner circle is called “the Stepsons of the Dragon.” This title backs up my theory as to the origins of Dracula and its name, especially that each member of the inner circle uses the name of Dracula. Lai conflates the Dracula originally created by Stoker with the Dracula of the Tales of the Shadowmen books, which I accept. He also conflates him with Peter Tremayne’s Dracula. However, I can’t accept that since that Dracula was Egyptian. I still can accept a connection via the cult ties. Though the story brings in MONSTAAH, the creation of Chuck Loridans, which is actually a fictional group founded on a website, I only accept the fictional stories regarding MONSTAAH and its members to be in the Horror Universe, but not their essays and timelines, unless they work their way into a story.

Release Date: 2005 (Setting is 1916, during the events of Les Vampires)

The Story: Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne are on honeymoon in Paris where they become targets of the infamous Vampires gang, and are aided by the vigilante hero Judex.

Notes: The Vampires are from the serial film Les Vampires. Batman’s inclusion here through his parents, based on the date of the setting, implies that this is the golden age version of Batman, and only his golden age tales, and other crossovers in this book, should be considered Horror Universe canon. Clearly there is a place for the Dark Knight Detective in this world, especially with some of his darker adventures. Fantomas is a pulp vigilante of the era, as is Rouletabille, the Nyctalope, the Shadow, and Doctor Mystere. Judex is a vigilante from the film serial of the same name. Interestingly, this story implies that the Shadow may be the true father of Batman. Though that wouldn’t fly as canon in the DC Comics Universe, it certainly may be true in the Horror Universe. The alias used by the Shadow of Col. Kentov is the same one used in Philip Jose Farmer’s Adventure of the Peerless Peer, thus I have an inclination to include that tale in Horror Universe canon as well despite its lack of horror crossovers. The Merry Widow is a film that is placed in canon due to references in this story.

Notes: This story by Moorcock takes the familiar characters used in Tales of the Shadowmen and creates alternate reality doppelgangers. Moorcock’s multiverse is actually a subset of the Horror Multiverse, as revealed in the Tales of the Shadowmen Volume 6. And sadly, I don’t own this volume (# 3), and apparently, nobody I know does either. I spent an exhaustive three days searching the net for a time setting for this story, but to no avail. I can only assume based on the characters used that it takes place in the early 20th century, but I can’t confirm that.

TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 2: GENTLEMEN OF THE NIGHT “A JEST, TO PASS THE TIME” (STORY BY JESS NEVINS)

The Story: A mysterious person sends the world’s greatest thieves out to get the fabled Moonstone.

Notes: This story by Jess Nevins is packed full of subtle and overt crossovers. You could simply buy the book and read it yourself, but unless you are familiar with film and literature of the era, chances are you won’t catch them all yourself. As for the horror crosses, Phantom of the Opera is well established in the Horror Universe. Carmilla is one of the earliest known vampire novels. Belphegor, later known in film versions as the Phantom of the Louvre, is a 1927 novel of the occult. The Centenarian is another novel about a vampire. And Les Vampires is a film serial.

Notes: Fascinax is an occult investigator from French pulps. Secretly, he is Dr. George Leicester. Irma Vep is the main character from the serial film Les Vampires, whose fate at the end of that film must have been misleading, as is often the case with our favorite “monsters”.
