Ce poste sera couvrant l'un des grands héros de feuilletons français, qui peuvent avoir été un inpiration tant pour l'Ombre et Batman, et qui a beaucoup de croisements, particulièrement avec des personnages de pâte à papier.

TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 1: THE MODERN BABYLON “PENUMBRA” (SHORT STORY BY JEAN-MARC AND RANDY LOFFICIER)
Release Date: 2005 (Setting is 1916, during the events of Les Vampires)
Series: Tales of the Shadowmen
Horror Crosses: The Vampires
Non-Horror Crosses: Batman; Fantomas; Judex; Rouletabille; Nyctalope; the Shadow; Doctor Mystere; The Merry Widow
The Story: Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne are on honeymoon in Paris where they become targets of the infamous Vampires gang, and are aided by the vigilante hero Judex.
Notes: The Vampires are from the serial film Les Vampires. Batman’s inclusion here through his parents, based on the date of the setting, implies that this is the golden age version of Batman, and only his golden age tales, and other crossovers in this book, should be considered Horror Universe canon. Clearly there is a place for the Dark Knight Detective in this world, especially with some of his darker adventures. Fantomas is a pulp vigilante of the era, as is Rouletabille, the Nyctalope, the Shadow, and Doctor Mystere. Judex is a vigilante from the film serial of the same name. Interestingly, this story implies that the Shadow may be the true father of Batman. Though that wouldn’t fly as canon in the DC Comics Universe, it certainly may be true in the Horror Universe. The alias used by the Shadow of Col. Kentov is the same one used in Philip Jose Farmer’s Adventure of the Peerless Peer, thus I have an inclination to include that tale in Horror Universe canon as well despite its lack of horror crossovers. The Merry Widow is a film that is placed in canon due to references in this story.
TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 2: GENTLEMEN OF THE NIGHT “LOST AND FOUND” (SHORT STORY BY JEAN-MARC LOFFICIER)
Release Date: 2006 (Setting is 1916)
Series: Tales of the Shadowmen
Horror Crosses: The Vampires
Non-Horror Crosses: Judex; Maltese Falcon
The Story: Judex tips off the Vampires gang to an incoming shipment of a certain infamous Falcon statue.
Notes: Thus bringing in the novel of the Maltese Falcon into the Horror Universe.
1917--JUDEX'S NEW MISSION--A sequel serial was released in 1917 titled Judex's New Mission (La Nouvelle Mission de Judex).
World War I circa 1917--NIGHT OF THE NYCTALOPE--"Justice and Power"--"Justice and Power" has a pain-maddened Leo Saint-Clair knocking heads with Judex during one of the closing battles of World War I circa 1917, which explains how the Nyctalope had his memories of the horrible tragedy that befell his family on Barsoom suppressed for so long.
TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME III: DANSE MACABRE “TWO HUNTERS” (SHORT STORY BY ROBERT L. ROBINSON, JR.)
Release Date: 2007 (Setting is 1917)
Series: Tales of the Shadowmen
Horror Crosses: The Vampires
Non-Horror Crosses: Tarzan; Opar; Judex
The Story: One of Tarzan’s foes plots to kidnap Jane and their child, prompting Tarzan and Judex to work together.
Notes: Tarzan’s Horror Universe canon is his original stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs and crossover stories mentioned in this book. Opar is also a creation of Burroughs and the same rules apply. Judex is from a film serial, as are the Vampires. Originally, I had this set in 1915, in the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia, based on information from Win Scott Eckert, but the author of the story has informed me the story was set in 1917.
1917--JUDEX'S NEW MISSION--A sequel serial was released in 1917 titled Judex's New Mission (La Nouvelle Mission de Judex).

THE BLOODY RED BARON: ANNO DRACULA 1918 (NOVEL BY KIM NEWMAN)
Release Date: November 1995 (Setting is 1918)
Series: Anno Dracula
Animated Series Crosses: Peanuts
Other Crosses: The Shadow; Biggles; Sherlock Holmes; The Vampyre; Ashenden; The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; Fantomas; Dr. Thorndyke; Bulldog Drummond; The Saint; The Island of Doctor Moreau; Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Batman (Silver Age); Harry Flashman; Doc Savage; Captain Midnight; Sidney Reilly; Lord Peter Wimsey; Lady Chatterley’s Lover; Arrowsmith; The Sun Also Rises; Averoigne; Enemy Ace; Grave of the Vampire; Hellraiser; Dawn Patrol; Robur the Conqueror; La Bete Humaine; Alraune; The Great Gatsby; A Rebours; The Black Cat; All Quiet on the Western Front; Sadie Thompson; Lemora; The Blue Angel; The Roaring Twenties; Gigi; Tarnished Angels; The Good Soldier Svejk; Jules et Jim; Le Roi de Coeur; The Last Flight; Billy Bunter; Judex; Dad’s Army; The Vampire Thrills; The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp; Faustine; Citizen Kane; The Bridge on the River Kwai; Oh! What a Lovely War; Paths of Glory; Metropolis; The Spy in Black; Near Dark; Forever Knight; Parade’s End; The Heap; Where Eagles Dare; Fright Night; Journey’s End; Dracula; The Big Parade; Anak Pontianak; The Blue Max; Necroscope; Revelations in Black; The Dragon Waiting; Paths of Glory; Under Two Flags; Doctor Who
The Story: During World War I, 30 years after the events of Anno Dracula, the Diogenes Club tries to stop the Nazis from creating undead fighter pilots.
Notes: The Anno Dracula Universe is a divergent timeline, where Dracula married Queen Victoria during the events of Bram Stoker’s novel. This led to a very different reality. Snoopy appears in this story, having been shot down by the Red Baron. In the main Cartoon Universe, Snoopy’s battles with the Red Baron didn’t really happen, and were merely part of Snoopy’s imagination. It seems that in this divergent timeline, Snoopy indeed existed as a pilot in World War I, placing those imaginary scenarios and two popular songs in this divergent timeline. Perhaps the Snoopy of the main reality gets visions of his alternate timeline counterpart, which inspire his playtime. Other crosses listed above are also divergent versions that exist in the Anno Dracula timeline.
May 1925--BELPHEGOR--The Celeritas Detective Agency appears in this serial and also previously appeared in JUDEX.

Some entries, such as this one, list the large number of crossovers without much detail because Sean Levin's website already covers them in much greater detail.
TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 10: ESPIRIT DE CORPS “THE PRIVILEGE OF ADONIS” (SHORT STORY BY CHRIS NIGRO)
Release Date: November 30, 2013 (Setting is 1929)

Horror Crosses: Werewolf of Paris; Hunchback of Notre Dame; Frankenstein (Skywald Comics)
Non-Horror Crosses: Felifax the Tiger Man
The Story: Felifax battles the Werewolf of Paris while his surrogate sister is kidnapped by Quasimodo.
Notes: Author Chris Nigro explains in this story the appearances of the Hunchback in such a late time frame as the late 19th and early 20th centuries, considering the setting of the original story. In particular, he references the meeting between the hunchback and the Frankenstein Monster in Skywald’s Psycho # 4. Felifax is an obscure French jungle hero whose original adventures have recently been reprinted by Black Coat Press. He has only appeared in two stories not by the original author. One is this story, and the other is “The Eye of the Tiger-Man” also by Chris Nigro and found in the Shadow of Judex anthology also published by Black Coat.

TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 7: FEMME FATALES “FACES OF FEAR “ (SHORT STORY BY MATTHEW DENNION)
Release Date: November 27, 2010 (Setting is 1959 and contemporary)
Series: Tales of the Shadowmen
Horror Crosses: A NIghtmare on Elm Street
Non-Horror Crosses: Judex; Batman
The Story: In 1959, Dr. Jonathan Crane tests his fear toxin on a little girl. Her fear is so strong that it pulls Freddy Krueger from his future time period, allowing Krueger to possess the girl.
Notes: Dr. Jonathan Crane will go on to become Batman’s foe, the Scarecrow. In the comics, the Scarecrow first appeared in the 1940s. In the Horror Universe, there was a Batman in the 1940s, with his sidekick becoming the second Robin in the 1960s. Presumably, Crane was younger in the Horror Universe and went on to be an enemy of the second Batman. In Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, Freddy dissipated at the end of the story, as he often does when he’s defeated. This time, he must have moved backward through time, being incorporeal within the timestream. This story isn’t the first instance of Freddy possessing someone. In the second Nightmare film, Freddy possesses Jesse, the boy who moves into Nancy’s house five years after Nancy defeated Freddy. His anxiety as the new kid allowed Freddy to slowly take over. The more control he gained, the more fear Jesse had of losing control. Thus, the fear of losing control gave Freddy more control. Then in Nightmare 5, Freddy tries to possess an unborn child still within the womb, this time by convincing the child in his dreams to willingly be a vessel. Judex is the hero of this story.

April 1987--TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 11: FORCE MAJEURE--"A Fistful of Judexes"--An interview with a security company that carries on the legacy of Judex. Crossovers include: HOUSE OF CARDS, BERGERAC, TEDDY VERANO, THE BLACK COATS.
ALTERNATE REALITIES:
TVCU-2--A remake was made in 1934 under the same title, directed by Maurice Champreux, and starring René Ferté as Judex.
TVCU-3--Another remake was done in 1963 by director Georges Franju under the same title. The story was shortened and simplified but remained true to the original. American magician Channing Pollock was cast as the mysterious hero.
TVCU-4--The setting of a screenplay for Judex by Robert L. Robinson, Jr., which is available from Black Coat Press. The story places Judex in the modern era, circa 2007, and Mr. Robinson informs me he is trying to get a Judex television series created!!!

There were some Tales of the Shadowmen stories that I didn't have dates for, so I have left them off until I can find the dates. I have all the books, but they are buried right now unfortunately.
Thanks to Win Scott Eckert, Jess Nevins, and Jean-Marc Lofficier, for bringing Judex into my world.
