Jay and Silent Bob's View Askewed Television Crossover Universe

Well, we hit 420,000 views on the website, and for some reason, that number makes me think of Jay & Silent Bob.

The View Askewniverse movies are all connected, mostly by Jay And Silent Bob appearing in every movie. Aside from that, there are numerous events, elements, and secondary characters that intertwine throughout all six films. It also helps that the movies take place in the same state.

Jay and Silent Bob are fictional characters portrayed by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, respectively, in Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse, a fictional universe created and used in most of the films, comics, and television programs written and produced by Smith, beginning with Clerks.

Jay and Silent Bob have appeared in most of Smith's films, with the exceptions of Jersey Girl, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Cop Out, Red State, and Tusk. The characters are shown spending most of their time selling marijuana in front of the convenience store in the Clerks films. In Clerks: The Animated Series, they were also shown selling illegal fireworks.

Shermer, Illinois is in the America of the TVCU, despite the fact that Jay and Silent Bob couldn't find it.  John Hughes once said that all of his projects were meant to exist in the same shared reality, and since I honor writer's intent here in the TVCU, anything with Hughes' name in the credits as writer, director, or producer automatically makes it in.  Not that Hughes didn't help us out, by placing most of his works in the same fictional Shermer, a suburb of Chicago.  This includes the Brat Pack films, the Vacation films, the Home Alone films, and others.

There is plenty of silliness in the TVCU naturally. Austin Powers exists in the TVCU. The Muppets exist in the TVCU. Jay and Silent Bob, Wayne's World, Scary Movie, the Pink Panther, Get Smart, ect. They are just sort of cartoonish because the TVCU isn't the real world.

1960--PSYCHO--Morley is a fictional brand of cigarette that has appeared in various television shows, films, and video games that otherwise have no connection to each other. The iconic, fictional brand packaging resembles the original packaging of the Marlboro cigarette brand. The name "Morley" is a play on "Marleys", a nickname for Marlboro cigarettes. Morleys appear at least as far back as 1960, in Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho. There is also a Morley Lights version, in a gold and white package (similar to Marlboro Lights), marked "Lights."  Morleys have appeared primarily in TV shows, and at times in movies, music videos, and other media, as both a prop and a plot element.  one of them listed her is the afro music video because i got high which guest stars Jay and Silent bob

• Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead (2008): Rusty Nail, played by Mark Gibbon, buys Morley cigarettes in the opening scene in the shop, which he then smokes.
• Murderer's Row (1966): Matt Helm uses a dart in a cigarette to take down a guard. He leaves the now empty pack of Morley cigarettes on the guard, showing the warning about smoking possibly being dangerous to your health.

The pack of Morleys shown is an old-fashioned design (based on the 1930s setting of the movie), unlike the modern-looking packs of Morleys more frequently seen.
• Platoon (1986): Morleys are smoked by American soldiers.
• Prozac Nation (2001): The character played by Christina Ricci smokes Morley cigarettes in the film version of Elizabeth Wurtzel's autobiographical Prozac Nation. Ricci plays a young writer who occasionally uses the empty cigarette packs as scrap paper.
• Psycho (1960): At the end of the film, psychiatrist Dr. Fred Richman, played by Simon Oakland, tells the story of what really happened and shakes a cigarette out of a pack of Morleys. • "Because I Got High (Positive Remix)" by Afroman: In this music video, a man sitting on a motorized couch is seen smoking and holding a pack of Morleys before he smokes a joint, throws the cigarette behind him, and drops the pack because he got high.
• Broken Saints: The character Raimi buys a pack of Morley cigarettes in this online cartoon. William B. This was a April Fool's Day joke that got lots of us very excited when we thought it was real.  However, it is real enough for the TVCU.  The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a graphic novel which appears in Crossovers.  Note only the first two volumes (and this) are in the TVCU.  Kesuke Miyagi is from THE KARATE KID.  Thus this brings in the whole film series.  THE LOST BOYS is from a series of films, which are now brought in.  (Some have suggested the town of those films is really Sunnydale.)  Oscar Goldman is from CHARLIE'S ANGELS, which is already in.  Mr. Han is from FAST TIMES AS RIDGEMONT HIGH, bringing that film in.  Emmet Brown is from BACK TO THE FUTURE, which is already in.  Tony Montana is from SCARFACE, bringing that film in.  Jack Burton is from BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, which is in Crossovers.  Angus MacGyver is from MACGYVER, which bring in this series, and MACGRUBER.  We know where B.A. Baracus is from, I hope by now.  Lisa is from WEIRD SCIENCE.  This is the film version, which confirms Shermer, IL in the TVCU (thus confirming that Jay and Silent Bob are not good at navigation.)  The TV Lisa is also in the TVCU.  Eventually, I will do a Shermer blog, and straighten out how both versions coexist.  Likely the show is in the TVCU2.

Apr 16/95--CLERKS--Clerks, released in 1994, is the first film to feature Jay and Silent Bob. In the View Askewniverse continuity, it takes place the day after Mallrats. Jay and Silent Bob return to their primary business location in front of Quick Stop. Throughout the day, they are seen dancing, loitering, and harassing passersby. Silent Bob enters the store to buy powdered sugar while Jay goes inside to steal food. They also deal marijuana to various pedestrians (including Willam Black), much to the chagrin of Quick Stop clerk Dante Hicks. In addition, the duo hangs out with Silent Bob's Russian cousin Olaf, who runs a heavy metal band and is looking to do a gig in New York City.  Aware of Dante's dilemma with Caitlin Bree and Veronica, Silent Bob says to him, "You know, there's a million fine-looking women in the world, dude. But they don't all bring you lasagna at work. X (10th anniversary DVD), based on a scene previously off-screen in the original film and only seen in the comics.  Joey Lauren Adams plays Alyssa Jones in Clerks:  The Lost Scene, Chasing Amy, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.  Alyssa asks Dante why he smells like shoe polish, a running gag from this movie.  Talks about how Julie died and the game show she was supposed to appear on, both events from this movie.  Randall calls Alyssa "finger cuffs" a nickname her character has in Chasing Amy.  Randall has a trading card of God and 2 angels that resemble Bartleby and Loki from this movie

1998 to Present--THE SECRET DIARY OF DESMOND PFEIFFER--So if this show is based on "an actual historic document" according to it's own opening and they watch it in Clerks: The Animated Series and there's even Desmond Pfeiffer Civil War burgers fast food places does this count of a crossover?

1998--DOGMA--Jay and Silent Bob went looking for Shermer, and couldn't find it.  They conclude it doesn't exist.  Jay and Silent Bob have links to the TVCU as do Shermer.  Perhaps they couldn't find it because they are idiots, but perhaps the town is in some strange temporal anomaly that sometimes causes it to shift in and out of existence.  Rufus later reveals a secret from Bethany's past about a boy named Brian Johnson, which is the same name as a character from the John Hughes film The Breakfast Club (1985) set in Shermer.  Brian O'Halloran plays Grant Hicks, another of Dante's cousins.  Alanis Morissette plays God in Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.  Note that in Dogma, God has been absent, sort of like Supernatural.  In the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which was supposed to be the final View Askewniverse film, God closes a book called View Askewniverse.  This could be taken as God ending the universe.  But going back to Supernatural, where God has been shown to write a series of books called Supernatural and a new project called Revolution, I'm going to presume that this means that God also wrote the View Askeniverse, likely through a muse, to a prophet named Kevin Smith.  Kevin Smith exists in the same universe as Jay and Silent Bob, as demonstrated in Yes Dear and the New York Times.  Kevin Smith would go on to later write and direct "JAY AND SILENT BOB GO CANADIAN, EH?", as seen in Degrassi:  The Next Generation.  It's presumed that this was Kevin Smith's first Jay and Silent Bob project that was not inspired by God.  It's weird that Banky Edwards owned the rights to Bluntman and Chronic, which he co-created with Holden McNeil, but Kevin Smith was also making films about the duo and other people that existed in the real world.  Jay wants to visit Quick Stop.  On the train, Jay can be heard describing the events of Mallrats to Bartleby and Loki.  Metatron is a majore character in this film.  Metatron also appears in Metatron (2012), God's Diary Is Embarrassing (2012), Damned on Earth (2014) and "Supernatural".  God also appears.  God also appears in the TVCU in numerous films and shows, including "Cimarron Strip", True Grit, "Land of the Lost", "The Young Ones",  "Miami Vice", Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, "Family Guy" , "The Simpsons", "Supernatural" and more.  For a full list, click here.  Jay wants to visit Quick Stop.  Buddy Christ adopted as Catholic mascot

The orange rock penis is possibly a reference to the 1995 movie Mallrats, where Brodie Bruce asks Stan Lee if Thing’s penis is made of orange rock.  Bill Clinton’s “exit polling” joke is cut short on FOX to remove Bill’s line, “It depends on what the definition of the word ‘jizz’ is” before it cuts to Lois saying that she was a worse wife than Lorena Bobbitt when she married the Thing.



2007--CLERKS II--Thirteen years after the events in Clerks, and five years after the events in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, released in 2006, takes place. Now in their early 30s, Jay and Silent Bob had recently bought a car, but they were pulled over for driving with a deployed airbag. During the search, the police found a stash of marijuana and they were sentenced to six months of rehabilitation, where they become devout sober Christians.  Once out of rehab, they are clean, but continue to deal while trying to teach the word of God, in a manner similar to evangelists. In one scene, Jay even suggests to a couple of buyers that they should read the "Holy Fucking" Bible. The Quick Stop where Dante worked was burned in a fire due to Randal leaving the coffee pot on, and Randal and he moved over to the Mooby's fast food restaurant. Jay and Silent Bob follow them there. In the beginning of the film, Jay expresses some disillusionment at being a drug dealer and weighs on other ideas of what to do in life.  At one point during the movie, Jay, knowing boredom is the first step to relapse, dances to the song "Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus after Silent Bob puts the tape in the boom box. He parodies exactly the same dance done by Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, complete with the "tuck", although it is alleged Jay has been doing this in real life before Silence of the Lambs came out.  Near the end of the film, they are jailed with Dante, Elias, and Randal, in which the latter hired a donkey show to celebrate Dante moving away. Jay and Silent Bob were charged for possession of drugs, which violated their probation. They bear witness to Dante and Randal's fight in the jailhouse, but at first provide no meaningful help, with Silent Bob unable to come up with his usual wisdom and instead criticizing Jay for never contributing to a conversation. Randal wants to reopen the Quick Stop with Dante, but neither of them has the money, so Jay and Silent Bob offer them some of the Bluntman and Chronic movie royalty money under the condition that the two are allowed to loiter outside the shop and that the police cannot be called to arrest them. After the Quick Stop is reopened, Jay and Silent Bob return to where they started so many years ago.  There are several references to the first film, including the #37 firetruck, Randal's line "You're not supposed to be here today", and more.  Emma knees Dante in the balls and says "You fucker". So does Gwen to Silent Bob in Mallrats when he burst in to the changing room!  According to the official View Askew timeline on their website, Clerks was 1995, so this is supposed to be 13 years later, 2008.  But that same official website timeline places Jay and Silent Bob in 2001, and this is supposed to be five years after that, in 2006.  So I'm taking the average, and placing it in 2007.

2009--MAY - THE HORROR AT RED BANK - Ivan travels to Belfry NJ to investigate a possible Jersey Devil sighting but discovers instead a new costumed vigilante using the identity of the Nightgaunt.  Ivan and Ford O'Donald pursue the Nightgaunt to Red Bank and suspect the 'hero' is an employee of Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash. They follow three suspects in hopes of discovering who it is and how he or she knows about nightgaunts; to this end they visit the Broadway Diner, the Quick Stop, and a Mooby's fast food restaurant. They do not find the Nightgaunt. though they do find Jesus, Carmen Sandiego, and Waldo. Abandoning their quest when Ivan is called to New York by the Ordnance, Ford returns to Belfry, where he has secretly been assuming the guise of the Nightgaunt inspired by dreams of winged faceless creatures attacking those who venture into forbidden lands.


Nightgaunt / Night-Gaunt first appeared in Lovecraft's 1929 -1930 poem FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH.  The Quick Stop convenience store is the setting for the film CLERKS (1994). Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash was known as Brodie's Secret Stash when it was seen in the film JAY

Note that Matt Murdock must be about 50-ish by this point, but due to his exceptional fitness and training, he still seems to be operating as Daredevil.

2012 to 2013--DON'T TRUST THE B--- IN APARTMENT 23--James Van Der Beek played himself as a regular character on Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23. He also played himself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Since Jay and Silent Bob are in the TVCU, that also brings Don't Trust the B into the TVCU.

2013--PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES 2 VS. JAY AND SILENT BOB--This was shown originally at a comic con.  Click here to watch it.  

2013--JAY AND SILENT BOB'S SUPER GROOVY CARTOON MOVIE--Jay and Silent Bob become Blunt Man & Chronic for real.  They encounter the movie version of Bane and the comics version of Loki, as well as a Dock Ock wannabe.  Cocknocker returns as a real villain.  The story ends with Stan Lee asking them to join the Avengers Initiative.  I'm not even going to work out these crossovers in TVCU continuity.  Oh, Magneto's there too.  And they also run into Doc Brown (from BACK TO THE FUTURE).

February 2016--JAY AND SILENT BOB:  CHRONIC BLUNT PUNCH--In February 2016, Interabang announced the development of Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch, a beat 'em up video game in the style of Castle Crashers featuring the titular characters fighting through miscreants in the "mall of purgatory" down the street from the Quik Stop. In addition to combat, the game includes a means to use insults as finishing moves in combat. The game is being developed with input from Smith and considered part of the View Askewniverse. Interabang used the Fig crowdfunding to raise $400k to complete the title, which successfully raised over $435,000 at the completion of the campaign.

The Near Future--MALLRATS 2  (AKA MALLBRATS)--In March 2015, Smith announced that he was in the process of creating Mallrats 2 and that a majority of the cast had already signed on to return for the sequel. In April 2015, it was confirmed that production of the film would begin in late 2015 and would be Smith's next project. Smith said, "we were talking about initially shooting Clerks III this summer and then we were going to get to Mallrats in the beginning of 2016. And then it jumped into 2015, where we were going to shoot Clerk’s and then hopefully Mallrats before the end of the year. But now, based on a f—ing mall that we all dig that will be going away, the priority has become Mallrats. So, the next f—ing movie I’m making isMallrats 2." 

2018--CLERKS III--Kevin Smith said in 2013, in a Reddit Ask me Anything that the duo would appear in Clerks III.  On July 2, 2014, at Colston Hall as part of the Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie tour, Kevin Smith said that the next appearance of the duo would be in Clerks III, and that they hoped to begin filming in the summer of 2015.  Production was originally set to begin in May 2015, but was put on hold in favor of shooting Mallrats 2 first.

The Near Future--MOOSE JAWS--Allegedly, Silent Bob will die in this film.

Buffyverse--Demonic versions of Jay and Silent Bob can be seen in one panel on the second page of Angel: After the Fall issue #5, standing outside of a cafe in the safe haven of Silverlake. Writer Brian Lynch confirmed the reference and attributed their inclusion to artistFranco Urru.

DC Universe--Jay and Silent Bob made a brief appearance in one panel of Green Arrow (vol. 3) #6, standing outside Jason Blood's Safe House inStar City. This issue was written by Kevin Smith during his 15-issue run on the title character. The duo were also interviewed by Newstime Magazine following the Death of Superman.  

Memeverse--Just google it.  Tons of Jay and Silent Bob mash-ups.

Mirror Universe--Fanboys (cameo) Not actually "Jay and Silent Bob", they are a close facsimile. (The roles were reversed. Smith's character was hanging out in front of the gas station bathroom, pimping out Jason Mewes' character.)

TVCU2--Clerks – a live-action pilot for a TV show, based on the film Clerks. (This production did not involve Kevin Smith).

TVCU-4 (or the Arrowverse, or Earth-1, or the DC TV Universe, or the Comic Book Toobworld)--Jay and Silent Bob recently visited Central City, and I"m told Jay had an Earth-2 doppelganger who was part of Zoom's super-villain army.  Note that what they call Earth-2 is actually the Mirror TVCU-4.
