The Other Mystery Solving Teens
You know Scooby-Doo and Mystery, Incorporated. And you know Josie and the Pussycats. But in the 1970s, there were several groups of teenagers with mascots running around the country solving mysteries. Most can attribute Mystery, Inc. as the starter of the trend. This blog has already covered Scooby and Josie in separate articles, and in fact, both are over on the right hand column in most most viewed blogs list. c. 1,000,000 B.C.--THE FLINTSTONE KIDS--Captain Caveman is the hero of Bedrock, and a single father. Note this is the Looniverse. There was also a Captain Caveman c. 10,0000 B.C. in the TVCU who was frozen in ice and thawed in the 1970s. Note also that Fred, Barney, Wilma and Betty are all children living in the same town of Bedrock.
c. 1,000,000 B.C.--FLINTSTONES COMEDY HOUR--Captain Caveman operates as a hero in Bedrock. Note this is the Looniverse counterpart of the hero who gets frozen in ice in the TVCU.
1969 - 1978--SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? (ANIMATED SERIES)--A group of teenagers and their talking dog go around solving mysteries which always involves debunking a fake haunting.
Yes, Scooby is in. And the series should be in. It’s got the crossovers, and it’s about kids going around debunking the supernatural. It is a horror series for kids. But we’ve got two issues. So let’s talk about the talking dog in the room. Scooby is an intelligent talking dog, and yet, in all the travelling and meeting new people, nobody is freaked out by a talking dog. (Actually, Speed Buggy was freaked out to encounter a talking dog, despite him being a talking car.) In this case, I can’t offer any in-story references that support a theory. All I can offer is a hypothesis which you can accept or reject. If you reject, feel free to create your own or just ignore Scooby’s existence in the TVCU. My best theory is that Scooby is indeed a mutant dog, or else somehow transformed by magic, in some untold tale from before the series began. And perhaps he really only talks to the kids when no one else is around, or else maybe the kids are the ones enchanted, and are the only ones who can hear Scooby talk. But considering that the nature of the show is that magic isn’t real, I’d say the mutation is more likely. The second issue is the one we have with comics. These kids don’t age. They are eternally high school seniors, at least through this initial first series. But that doesn’t work in a universe where most characters do age normally. Each Scooby-Doo series is looked at independently, and some are in and some aren’t. In some later series, the kids are older, but not as old as they should be considering their setting remains contemporary. (As in the 1970s stories where they are teens are set in the 1970s while their 2000s stories where they are in their mid 20s are set in the 2000s.) I will address the issue again for each series entry and how I choose to resolve the issue. But for this series, I think it best to place the events as taking place in the summer before their senior year, and then weekends and school breaks throughout their senior year. (After all, they do a lot of travelling for high school students.) And that’s the best I can do. If anyone comes up with something better, I applaud you and suggest you apply your solution to your shared crossover universe.
1971--THE FUNKY PHANTOM--Three teenagers and the ghost of a patriot from the American Revolution set across the country to uphold justice and fight discrimination.
1973 to 1975--JEANNIE--Corey Anders, an average California teenager, finds an unusual-looking bottle on the beach while surfing. He opens it, and a beautiful genie named Jeannie emerges. Her bumbling, corpulent sidekick genie Babu also emerges, and the two become Corey's servants. Most of the show's plots found Corey trying to live a normal teenager's life, while keeping the genies' identities secret, and teaming up with Jeannie to repair the damages caused by Babu's bungling.
1973 to 1983--SPEED BUGGY--Animated 'Saturday-morning' television cartoon about a race car.
September 1973--THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES (ANIMATED SERIES)--SEASON 2 EPISODE 19 “SCOOBY-DOO MEETS JEANNIE (AKA MYSTERY IN PERSIA)”--Jeanie transports Mystery, Inc. back to ancient Egypt to solve a mystery. This crossover brings the animated Jeanie into the Television Crossover Universe. This Jeanie was not the same from I Dream of Jeannie but were meant to be part of the same reality. All of Jeannie’s genie relatives were also named Jeanie. The animated Jeanie also used her magic exactly like the live action version.
October 1973--THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES (ANIMATED SERIES)--SEASON 2 EPISODE 22 “THE WEIRD WINDS OF WINONA”--Two groups of teens and their talking dog and car try to determine why people are fleeing their town. This brings in the animated Speed Buggy, which is about a living, talking, intelligent, animate car. Okay, I quit. No, no. I can do this. Refer back to my comments about talking dogs in the Television Crossover Universe and then triple your suspension of disbelief. Stephen King has at least demonstrated that cars can come to life plausibly and there’s certainly enough stories in the TVCU of other inanimate objects come to life. However, how nobody is freaked out when they meet Speed Buggy for the first time is still a mystery.
1975--SPEEDY BUGGY (CHARLTON COMICS)--Nine issues were published.
1977 to 1979--SCOOBY'S LAFF-A LYMPICS (LATER SCOOBY'S ALL-STARS)--First, I want to note that my first ever comic was an adaptation of this show. And this show was one of the reasons I do what I do know (meaning write about crossovers, not studying law, LOL.) OK, let's talk about the show. Members of the Looniverse community decide to have a continuing series of sporting events with three teams competing. The first team is the Scooby Doobies. This team consists of Scooby, Mystery, Inc, and several groups of mystery solving teenagers that are all pulled from the TVCU. This is the first time that Scooby and the Gang are visiting the Looniverse. They will visit often in the future. They eventually learn of a secret way to cross over on their own. Additionally, the constant exposure to the reality of the Looniverse has a physical effect on Mystery, Inc, causing the aging to slow down dramatically (or perhaps completely stop.) Certainly, now, at age 60, the members of Mystery, Inc. still appear to be in their 20s. And no dog lives that long for sure. But not only do they remain youthful, but the Looniverse effects that they have absorbed tends to make people around them back in the TVCU oblivious to the fact they don't age and don't even notice the dog is a mutant who talks. Back to the show, as I said, several mystery solving teens were pulled from the TVCU to be the team called the Scooby Doobies. Scooby was named team captain. The second team was the Yogi Yahooeys. This team was captained by YOGI BEAR and consisted of other Looniverse residents. Finally, the third team was the Really Rottens, led by MUMBLY. This team consisted of bad folk from the Looniverse. Often, OLLU AND BUZSLA were also pulled from the TVCU to be guest commentators. SNAGGLEPUSS and MILDEW WOLF were the regular hosts. JABBERJAW (of the TVCU) and PETER POTAMUS were frequent guest judges. The Scooby Doobies team consisted of (all from the TVCU): Scooby-Doo, Shaggy Rogers (Mystery, Inc.), Scooby-Dum (cousin of Scooby-Doo), DYNAMUTT, THE BLUE FALCON, CAPTAIN CAVEMAN (yup, another super-hero), THE TEEN ANGELS (Brenda Chance, Taffy Dare, and Dee Dee Skyes), SPEED BUGGY, Tinker, Babu (of the JEANIE family), and HONG KONG FOOEY. This last one is the one member of the team who is actually from the Looniverse. The Yogi Yahooey team consists of (all from the Looniverse): YOGI BEAR, BOO-BOO BEAR, CINDY BEAR, HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, PIXIE, DIXIE, MR. JINKS, HOKEY WOLF, YAKKY DOODLE, QUICK DRAW MCGRAW, SNOOPER, BLABBER, AUGGIE DOGGIE, DOGGIE DADDY, WALLY GATOR, and GRAPE APE. Finally, the Really Rottens team (also all from the Looniverse) are: MUMBLY, DREAD BARON (later revealed to be the twin brother of DICK DASTARDLY), DINKY DALTON, DIRTY DALTON, DASTARDLY DALTON, MR. CREEPLEY, MRS. CREEPLEY, JUNIOR CREEPLEY, ORFUL OCTOPUS, THE GREAT FONDOO, MAGIC RABBIT, DAISY MAYHEM, and SOOEY. Note that the Pussycats where also members of the Scoobies, but for legal reasons their scenes were cut from the aired version.

1978 to 1978--YOGI'S SPACE RACE--Jabberjaw participates in a space race with Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and the others from that group of Hanna-Barbera characters. Jabberjaw's racing partner is Buford from Buford and the Galloping Ghost.
1978 to 1999--VARIOUS COMICS--Jabberjaw has appeared over the years in comics such as Laff-A-Lympics issues No. 10 and No. 12 in 1978 and 1979. Hanna Barbera Presents No. 6 in 1995, and Cartoon Network Presents No. 23 in 1999.
February 1986--YOGI'S TREASURE HUNT--"Goodbye, Mr. Chump"--Jabberjaw appears.

July 1997--JOHNNY BRAVO--"Bravo Dooby Doo"--Scooby once again travels into the Looniverse and meets Johnny Bravo. At the end, Speed Buggy shows up. Cartoon Network has done
many promo spots for itself using odd and unusual crossovers such as Shaggy from Scooby-Doo and Droopy Dog discussing what they call The Pound Puppies in France while driving a (live-action) convertible in (live-action) L.A., Ã la Pulp Fiction.
1999--CARTOON NETWORK GROOVIES--"Jabberjaw"--Jabberjaw also appeared on Cartoon Network and Boomerang in a music video set to Pain's "Jabberjaw (Running Underwater)" with Jabberjaw and The Neptunes portrayed as a ska band, with the group dressed in modern clothing. In this version, Biff is the lead guitar and singer wearing a bowling shirt and jeans, Shelly is now dressed in a tank top and jeans and plays bass guitar & assists on vocals, Bubbles is dressed in a black top with a Catholic schoolgirl-style skirt and Mary Jane shoes and still plays the keyboard, and Clamhead is dressed in an updated version of what he wore in the original series and plays the trumpet & also assists on vocals. Jabberjaw still plays the drums and has a goatee and a nose ring. The Neptunes are animated in 3D escaping a lunch box decal and waging battle with an evil eel and his lobster robots who kidnap Shelly from one of the Neptunes' concerts.
2001--NIGHT OF THE LIVING DOO--Jabberjaw tries to take out Mystery, Inc. so he can finally get respect.
2002--HARVEY BIRDMAN, ATTORNEY AT LAW--Jabberjaw appeared later still in sporadic appearances on Cartoon Network's Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (2002) where the Neptunes were accused of stealing Shouyu Weanie's (portrayed by the Chan Clan) song. It is also referenced that in the late 1990s, Jabberjaw was briefly engaged to budding filmmaker Madeline Austin-Kulat. In this show, Frank Welker reprises his role of Jabberjaw and also voices Biff. Clamhead made another appearance in the episode "Identity Theft" where he was voiced by Steven Blum.
February 2004--JOHNNY BRAVO--"Johnny Goes Hollywood"--Jabberjaw makes a cameo.
May 2004--HARVEY BIRDMAN, ATTORNEY AT LAW--"High Speed Buggy Chase"--Mudsy appears, and the question "What makes the Funky Phantom so funky?" is finally asked and answered.

MYSTERY INCORPORATED (ANIMATED SERIES)--SEASON 1 EPISODE 14 “MYSTERY SOLVERS CLUB STATE FINALS”--When Scooby is sick, he is disappointed about missing the Mystery Solvers Club State Finals. He has a dream in which he does go, and teams up with the mascots of other mystery solving teens to stop a villain who turns out to be the Funky Phantom. The ending leaves it ambiguous if this was a dream or not. However, Speed Buggy already exists in the main Television Crossover Universe timeline (really) so I’m going to go with the implication that these events happened, or at the very least that all of these characters exist in this timeline, and thus have counterparts back in the main TVCU timeline. This would add Funky Phantom, Jabberjaw (that actually would take place in an alternate future timeline, where sharks can talk), and Captain Caveman to the main TVCU timeline. This would only bring in the original Captain Caveman show with the Teen Angels and not the later shows that portray Captain Caveman in Bedrock. This episode’s dream sequence was animated in the classic style of Scooby-Doo, Where are You?

2021--SEALAB 2021--"Return of Marco"--Jabberjaw is apparently killed.
2076--JABBERJAW--The futuristic undersea adventures of a goofy talking shark and his human musical band companions. Since Jabberjaw is killed in 2012, and this seems to be his earliest chronological appearance, as earlier appearances on the timeline refer to his friends, the Neptunes, we might presume that Jabberjaw later traveled back in time to the 1970s. Considering that all of these mystery solving teens and their mascots were affected by the temporary divergent timeline seen in Mystery Incorporated, and that they were all pulled to the Looniverse on countless occasions, so much so that they seemed to be able to come and go at their leisure, it's not a great leap that either the temporary timeline alteration and/or the connection to the Looniverse could have facilitated the time travel.
31st century--FUTURAMA--From Ivan: In the street racing episode of FUTURAMA, both the Mach-5 and Speed Buggy are slagged at a junk yard. Both of these vehicles are native to the Tooniverse, not the TVCU. I rest my case. Matt adds: in the Futurama ep 2d blacktop a Constitution-class star ship is seen in the scrap yard also when Sal is melting down things to scarp before the Professor steals the planet Express ship back He melts down Speedy Buggy who apetally owes him money. Then after The refit planet Express ship escapes the scarp yard Sal melts down the Mach 5 much to speed racers shock

In a segment that parodies the Laff-A-Lympics in the style of the Munich massacre, Captain Caveman and Shaggy Rogers confront Daisy Mayhem and Captain Caveman blows her up with the wrong club.
