A Tale of a Fateful Trip

I'm running out of crossovers.  I used to have a rule.  Only series that had three crossovers get covered.  But I'm running out of ideas.  So now I'm also going to cover series that had a franchise, meaning they spun off movies or such from the original concept.  (In doing my due dilligence, I found that this series actually does have the crossovers to make it following my three crossover rule.)

So today we're going to talk about Gilligan's Island.  With Gilligan, the skipper too.  The Millionaire and his wife.  The movie star, and the rest... okay, fine, the professor and Mary Ann.

William Gilligan was a mighty sailor man, or so the story goes.  However, he seemed on the island to be dimwitted at best.

CPT Jonahs Grumy was the skipper.  He was brave and sure.  If not for the courage of the fearless two, the S.S. Minnow would be lost.

Thurston Howell III is a former multi-billionaire until after the stock market crashed, leaving him merely a multi-millionaire.  He never worked a day in his life.

Eunice (Wentworth) Howell is Thurston's wife.  The Howells have a son, Thurston Howell IV.

Ginger Grant was a famous Hollywood movie actress.

Roy Hinkley, PhD, was actually a school teacher and scout master, though with several scientific degrees as well as amateur archeologist.  He was declared deceased when lost on the island, and his wife Carol remarried Michael Brady.

Mary Ann Summers grew up on a farm in Winnfield, Kansas, and may be distantly related to Jamie, Buffy and Scott Summers (Somers).  (Professor Chuck Loridans of MONSTAAH established the relationship between Buffy and Jaimie and Joss Whedon established the relationship between Buffy and Scott, so it's not a stretch to assume that Mary Ann is related to all of them.)

In 1944, Jonas Grumby was on the crew of the same ship saved by Harry Bailey.  For more on this, see Gordon Long's very cool article.

In 1964, the SS. Minnow goes out for a three hour tour, but after a terrible storm was lost at sea and the passengers and crew stranded on an uncharted island.  The pilot never aired originally and was found and aired in 1992.  The original series ran from 1964 - 1967.

In a Very Brady Sequel, from 1996, it is revealed that Carol Brady was previously married to Roy Hinkley.  This movie is anachronistic as it is a remake/parody of the Brady Bunch, which aired in 1969 - 1974, particularly the Hawaii episodes from 1973.  But it's set in the modern day.  However, for crossover purposes, there's nothing to say that Carol Brady wasn't married to Roy Hinkley in the original canon.  This movie also features a cameo from Detective Munch (or maybe his identical cousin who works in LA.)  However, that would be anachronistic to the crossover I'm trying to establish here.  This movie also establishes that Michael Brady was previously married to Jeannie and that could still work.

There is a cool connection to Marcus Welby speculated by Toby O'Brien which can be found here.

In 1974 - 1975, the castaways were still stranded as depicted in the New Adventures of Gilligan animated series.

Sometime between 1975 and 1978, the Professor builds a rocket and the crew end up stranded on another planet.  After 1978, though, they clearly make it back home, stranded on the same island.  This series aired from 1982 - 1983, but I'm assuming it must take place before the TV movies.

After returning to Earth is probably the setting of The Adventures of Gilligan's Island game for the NES.

In 1979, the castaways find their way home.  However, after some time at home, they reunite for another boat tour and end up stranded again.  The film was released in 1978 but is said to have been set 15 years after they were originally stranded.

Twelve days later, after being stranded once again, they manage to get off the island once more.  One year later (so 1980), the island is now a resort owned by Thurston Howell.  This TV movie (meant to be a pilot for a new series), aired in 1979.

Around 1980?--WWWF GRUDGE MATCH--"Pee-Wee Herman vs. Gilligan"--Not canon, but here it is.

In 1981, another millionaire attempts to steal the island because of its natural resources, and this involves a basketball game between the Harlem Globetrotters and a team of robots.  A theory from Gordon Long: About the Gilligan/Globies movie--the bad guys were played by Barbara Bain and Martin Landau. Now, their characters are too different to say that this is what happened to Cinnamon Carter and Rollin Hand after they left the Impossible Mission Force...probably (they'd have to turn evil and turn into mad scientists, which they weren't--they were just spies, one a model, the other a master of disguise). But I wonder if either the Landau mad scientist character, or perhaps Rollin Hand, was the character played by Landau in the first X-Files film: it must be asked if either character could have become the contact for Mulder. But...food for thought (and maybe Toby will have some thoughts on that too?) Also, I think Landau's mad scientist is somehow related to the Loveless family. [Same actor theories work better in Toby O'Brien's world than mine, though.]

In 1987, there is a series called the New Monkeys in which one episode has Roy Hinkley stopping by to help the guys out.

Also in 1987, Gilligan and the Skipper appear in Back to the Beach.

In 1989, Gilligan goes to McDonalds along with Grandpa Munster, Ed Clampett, Maxwell Smart, Eddie Haskell and June Cleaver.

In 1997, on the show Meego, Meego, an alien, tries to call home but instead reaches the castaways of Gilligan's Island, who seem to be once again stranded somehow.  (RIP Michelle Trachtenberg.)

From 2004 - 2005 there was a reality show, that attempted to replicate the original premise of Gilligan's Island, casting contestants who fit the models of Gilligan, the Skipper, the Millionaire, his wife, the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann.

Early 2005--ALOHA, SCOOBY-DOO!--The Scooby-Doo gang goes on an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii that's being sponsored by the Goha Aloha-surf company, thanks to Daphne winning a contest to design some new swimwear for them. However, there is conflict surrounding this year's surfing contest. Usually it's open only to the locals, but this year the mayor has it open to everybody, including mainlanders, causing some conflicts among the contestants who happen to be locals. A few days before the contest, an evil creature known as the Wiki-Tiki Spirit and its little tiki demons attack, kidnapping a local woman called Snookie. Manu, the local surfing champion (aka, "The Big Kahuna of Hanahuna") and Snookie's boyfriend, agrees to help the gang solve the mystery of the Wiki-Tiki and rescue Snookie. After Fred claims, "Danger is my middle name!," Velma reveals that his middle name is actually "Herman," making Fred's full name Fredrick Herman Jones. Gilligan's (from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND) skeleton is found in a cave - with theme music sting.
