Roswell: 51 Shades of Grey

Winter 1901 - Following the Sarmaks' betrayal of the Circle of Life collaborators on Annwn, and the Circle's decimation under the heat-rays of the invaders, any mention of extra-terrestrial life, Martian or otherwise, becomes an embarrassment for the second Professor James Moriarty. Although he ran the Circle of Life from a distance, and was planning on using the Circle cult members and the events of the Second Invasion with an eye towards eventually ruling Annwn himself, Moriarty now realizes that he needs to distance himself from those events. He taps the remaining infrastructure of the Circle of Life organization on Earth, renames the group "Krafthaus," and assigns Krafthaus members what seems a daunting task: the complete eradication of any substantial evidence of the existence of extra-terrestrials. Moriarty's goal is that within fifty years, no one on Earth will believe in alien life or that the War of the Worlds really happened. (However, even Moriarty could not have predicted the 1947 Roswell Incident and the resurgent interest in extra-terrestrials.)  Over the next several decades, and even beyond the second Professor Moriarty's death, his organization, now known as THRUSH, mounts a massive disinformation campaign, reducing the events of the Martian Invasion to mere mythology. Overall, the second Professor Moriarty's plan is successful, and by the latter half of the 20th Century, most people regard the events of The War of the Worlds as mere fiction. Of course, throughout Earth's history there have been countless extra-terrestrial contacts, such as the Eridaneans and the Capelleans, an orphaned infant from the planet Krypton, and visitations as described in the annals of the Cthulhu Mythos, Star Trek, and The X-Files. However, all records and knowledge of those contacts remain secret, unsubstantiated, or lost in the mists of ancient times.  In the late 20th Century, those who consider themselves to be rational and scientific, such as Dr. Dana Scully, refuse to believe, without substantial scientific proof, that alien life-forms have visited Earth. Thanks to the second Professor Moriarty's efforts, as well as the post-1947 machinations of the Consortium, an offshoot of THRUSH (see The X-Files), such proof no longer exists. 1800s--ATOMIC ROBO:  KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN CIRCLE--Atomic Robo is in the old west teaming up with Bass Reeves (the man who inspired the Lone Ranger in the real world, but who coexists with him as separate people in the TVCU) and Doc Holiday (who has had his share of crossovers with famous fictional characters and many other TVCU adventures that didn't happen in the real world).  Atomic Robo quotes his friend Buckaroo Banzai.  The adventure concludes with the bad guy's ship crashing into Groom Lake.  The wreckage is investigated by Jim West and Artemus Gordon (WILD WILD WEST).

1867 to Present--NATHANIEL CADE--Grey Aliens turn up in the Nathaniel Cade books, though it's implied they're not just ETs but something more sinister.

1912 to Present--Santa has appeared on screen since 1912, in over a thousand films and television shows. Not all are TVCU canon. Of those that are, some are of the “real” Santa and some are just a man in the suit, but it’s a TVCU concept that anyone wearing the suit can become possessed by the Christmas Spirit, a magical tulpa like aspect of Jesus. 1931--THE WHISPERER IN THE DARK--Some Mythos material had them as agents of the Mi-Go.

August 1939~Alison Dare: Little Miss Adventures; J. Torres and J. Bone--"A Day at the Museum (Or: Now Museum, Now You Don't)"  [From James Bojaciuk's Alison Dare post]--Alison and her friends decide to sneak into Dr. Dare's museum and take a private tour. Outside, they pass Tintin and Snowy from Hergé's The Adventures of Tintin. 

Inside the office, the girls find a Broken-Eared Statuette, from the Tintin adventure The Broken Ear (though it's possible to argue argue the squat, angry idol is meant to be the Chachapoyan fertility idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark, I believe it is not)...

...The Ark of the Covenant (on loan, presumably, from Area 51)...

And the Right Hand of Doom (from Hellboy) as well two of the three Sankara Stones (from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). The two lost Sankara Stones somehow made their way from an Indian river to the United States.  The presence of the Right Hand of Doom seems to contradict the fact that Hellboy was born in 1945, but the Right Hand preexisted not only Hellboy, but humanity. This is explored in The Island and Hellboy in Hell. (Keep in mind, however, that the Hellboy of the TVCU is not quite the Hellboy of Mike Mignola. The TVCU incorporates the events of Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and tones down--or eliminates--the apocalpyses.)

9th July 1947--FUTURAMA--"Roswell That Ends Well"--Emerging from a time-warp from the year 3002, the Planet Express ship crash-lands near Roswell, New Mexico.

night of 9th July 1947--FUTURAMA--"Roswell That Ends Well"--Philip J. Fry sleeps with his maternal grandmother Mildred, and inadvertently conceives his own father, Yancy Fry.  This fact is surmised by the Professor onscreen, but not explicitly confirmed until "The Why Of Fry". 10th July 1947--FUTURAMA--"Roswell That Ends Well"--The Planet Express crew return through the time-warp to 3002, leaving behind Bender's head. Bender's head will remain buried near Roswell for the next 1045 years.



July 1947--ROSWELL--Beginning at a 30-year reunion for members of a military nuclear bomb unit, flashbacks are presented that follow the attempts of Major Jesse Marcel to discover the truth about strange debris found on a local rancher's field in July of 1947. Told by his superiors that what he has found is nothing more than a downed weather balloon, Marcel maintains his military duty until the weight of the truth, however out of this world it may be, forces him to piece together what really occurred. Adapted from real-life events portrayed in the book _UFO Crash at Roswell_ by Kevin Randle and Donald Schmitt.

1947--DESTROY ALL HUMANS--Cryptosporidium-136 was shot Down over Roswell in 1947 and was imprisoned by Majestic in Area 42. They used Furon Tech to make Weapons. His body was found in 1959 by Cryptosporidium-137.

July 1947--INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL--Indy is called in to consult when an alien craft and it's inhabitants is captured.  These are likely the grey aliens from X-FILES and other series and movies.  However, how they got there is another story.  Just prior to their crash, a space craft from the 24th century arrived in Roswell.  Three Ferengi are captured until rescued by their shape shifter companion.  They return to the future (STAR TREK:  DEEP SPACE NINE), however leaving an opening from which the Planet Express crew from the 31st century are pulled backward.  While the ship's doctor is examined by the military, another crew member (originally from the late 20th century) creates a paradox by becoming his own grandfather (FUTURAMA).  Thus when they escape, they leave behind a nexus that draws the Grey Aliens to Earth and also makes Earth a target for invasions from other worlds.  Even more information on links to other series based on the Roswell event can be found here.



~April 1948--FUTURAMA--"Roswell That Ends Well"--Yancy Fry is born to Mildred, assuming a standard 9-month pregnancy.

1960s--DARK SKIES--In 1960s America, a young couple struggle to expose the truth about a hidden alien invasion, while a secret government organization follows its own agenda in dealing with the threat.



July 1969--STAR TREK--"Tomorrow is Yesterday/The Aliens are Coming!"--From Win Scott Eckert's Crossover Chronology--Captain John Christopher, a jet fighter pilot in the Air Force, stationed at SAC Headquarters in Omaha, has a strange, brief encounter with a UFO. Shortly thereafter, Christopher has vague memory flashes of futuristic humans, an alien named Spock, and a ship called the U.S.S. Enterprise. Meanwhile, government agent James Wainwright, who once encountered aliens calling themselves "Ferengi" in Roswell in 1947, attempts to use Captain Christopher's secret knowledge to promote his crusade of guarding Earth against alien attack. Fortunately, Captain Christopher is saved by Aegis agents Roberta Lincoln and Gary Seven.  The Star Trek episode Tomorrow Is Yesterday provides one of the best "teasers" of this or any other Star Trek series. The sequel, The Aliens Are Coming!, was written by Dayton Ward and can by found in the Strange New Worlds III anthology, May 2000. Captain John Christopher could very well be the son of Jimmy Christopher (Operator #5). The Roswell incident was documented in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode called Little Green Men. Seven and Lincoln first appeared in the episode Assignment: Earth, and also battled Khan Noonian Singh in The Eugenics Wars novels.

After the discontinuation of the Philadelphia Experiment (a program during World War II to render battleships invisible to radar), the scientists involved in that program were relocated to Los Alamos but none ever made it there and were instead sent to Roswell. Less than nine months after the alleged UFO crash in Roswell, the USS Eldridge not only hid from radar screens but disappeared entirely from the Philadelphia Navy Yard only to reappear minutes later, hundreds of miles away, in Norfolk, Virginia. 1975--VIGILANTE 8--Features a shootout at Area 51.

1979 to 1985--DUKES OF HAZZARD--The Dukes had encountered a grey alien.

1980--HANGAR 18--Shortly after the launch of a satellite from a space shuttle the satellite collides with an UFO in front of the crew's eyes. Because of an election campaign some politicians try to hide the crashed UFO -- inside hangar 18.

January 27, 1984--ROBOT CHICKEN--"Badunkadunk"--Michael Jackson is abducted by the Grey Aliens following the infamous Pepsi commercial where Michael caught fire and replaced by "White Michael Jackson" as part of some odd plot to take over the world. 

1986--CAPTAIN EO--Michael Jackson has left Earth and taken on the identity of Captain EO.  It could be the EO is Michael's real name.  Characters from Captain EO later crossover over with Star Wars, in STAR TOURS:  THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES.  Since Michael seemed to have aged in normal human like time and then became immortal as an adult, this can't be Michael in the past.  Let's assume that Micael is EO, and that EO is Michael's alien name.  Let's also assume that Michael had adventures as EO at some point in his long adult life, and that at some point he spent some time in the past of the Star Wars Galaxy.  (If we believe KINGDOM HEARTS and ONCE UPON A TIME, Star Wars doesn't actually take place in the past, but actually exists contemporary in another dimension.)  Of course, we know that Michael left in 1984 when the Grey Aliens kidnapped him.  He must have escaped and went on to have further adventures as EO.

1986 to 1997--MARRIED WITH CHILDREN--Al Bundy had an encounter with grey aliens.  

1988--MOONWALKER--Michael Jackson demonstrates his shape shifting abilities (which he has because he's an alien).  He takes on gangsters led by Mr. Big.  The shooting start that the child wishes upon, which brings Michael, may have been the Captain EO spaceship.  The drug dealers may have been K.R.A.K., from the video game NARC.  In that game, Mr. Big is in a wheel chair, which may be the result of this adventure.  I believe that his represents the real Michael Jackson's return to Earth after being kidnapped in 1984 by the Grey Aliens.  Even though the Robot Chicken sketch claims that the White Michael Jackson had been replacing Michael for over 15 years, I'd rather attribute the later Men in Black stuff to the real Michael.  Since I posted this, it's been brought to my attention that among those chasing Michael Jackson are the Noid from the Domino's commercials.  

1988 to 1997--ROSEANNE--Arnie is abducted by grey aliens.  

1993 to Present--X-FILES--X-Files features the grey aliens as alien colonists allied with conspirators to take over the world.  Area 51 is featured in the episode Dreamland.  

1995--AREA 51--This is a first person shooter arcade game, no relation to the later video game, about an escaped alien at Area 51. Matt Hickman adds:  In the Attract Mode for the 1995 Video game Area 51 it has a Bio for STAAR agent Stephanie Grant code Name Savage Snow it lists some of her missions including this one "1990 Antarctica Eradication of hostile Biological Life Form and Technologies. In other Words She fought the Thing.  Wasn't THE THING in 1982?  Yes But has We've seen in the Dark horse comics, the Video Game the Halloween Horror Nights: Carnival of Carnage website The Thing: Assimilation house and the Cabin in the Woods house it still lives. plus considering the Thing game even has the the Government using it. It's likely some part survived and lay dormant till 1990. plus the programmers have said it's a thing Shout out

November 1995--THE SIMPSONS--"Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming"--An alien is found in the base's Hangar 18.

1996--THE ROCK--THE ROCK, which has Sean Connery playing a role I like to think of as a continuation of his Bond, (though I admit the timelines don’t totally add up), mentions “the alien landing at Roswell” as part of the info on the microfilm Connery’s character stole.  [I will be covering the film versions of James Bond eventually in a later blog post.]

1997--GRAND THEFT AUTO--Area 69 is a place in the desert outside San Andreas.  

1997--LABYRINTH--Brian Keene's Labyrinth mythos claims grey aliens are the true form of angels.

1998--EUREKA--"Pilot"--Warren King (the head of Global Dynamics) and Henry Deacon had an incident at Groom Lake when they were drunk.  They may have been employed there or they may have been visiting.  

1998--X-FILES--"Dreamland"--Mulder's own incident at Area 51.

1998 to 2002--While in the military, SGT Robert E. Wronski, Jr. is acquanted with a retiree who had worked at Area 51.  While he couldn't tell Rob what he did there, he could say that he believes in the existence of extraterrestrial life.  

1998--TOMB RAIDER 3--Lara Croft steals Element 115 from Area 51.  Element 115 is also from XCOM AND COD:  ZOMBIES.  

SECTION ZERO (GORILLA COMICS)

The Story: Section Zero is a United Nations created team that has existed since the1960s. It’s mission is to investigate things that all governments are unified in denying, such as UFOs, monsters, lost civilizations, time travel, ancient gods, prehistoric survivors, and you get the picture. In fact, the United Nations does not recognize the existence of the team itself.

Notes: The team leader is Titania “Doc” Challenger, implied granddaughter of Professor Challenger from the lost World. Her ex-husband and teammate is Sam Wildman. Another team member is a grey alien. Though grey aliens are part of 20th century UFO lore, at the time of this series, they were regularly featured as a part of the ongoing storylines of the X-Files. The final member is a Gill-Man, of the same species as that seen in the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

2000--SCOOBY-DOO AND THE ALIEN INVADERS--This is actually the first 21st century film. Yes, I reference this as the New Millennium film series, though two films were in 1998 and 1999. The gang is driving through the Sonoran Desert when a sandstorm comes up and Shaggy makes a wrong turn onto government property but only to lose control of the Mystery Machine when Shaggy sees an UFO and the gang find themselves on the outskirts of small town Roswell where people are supposedly being abducted by aliens. It’s up to the gang to solve the mystery. Speaking of more adult themes, there is a subtle implication of anal probing! They also throw in a subtle "dick joke" when Shaggy exaggerates to the girl he likes about the size of a monster. During Shaggy's song & the subsequent daydream, there's a brief part that shows the rest of the gang in their original series outfits as they're all chasing a ghost in an old house. They even subtly throw in the original HB running & stopping sound effects from the 60s & 70s underneath the music. That's some attention to detail right there. In a part of the movie when Shaggy and Crystal are far away talking, you can hear him telling her about his and Scooby's first encounter with the Witch's Ghost.  Note that this takes place in one of the Scooby universes, the one of the new millenium animated films from Cartoon Network and direct to DVD.  It is not part of the main TVCU.

2001--AREA 52--Area 52 is a secret facility in Antarctica that holds such things as the wreckage from the Roswell crash, the Ark of the Covenant, the Super-Soldier formula, Mjolnir, the Lasso of Truth, H.G. Wells' Time Machine, and a Green Lantern power ring.  Some of these items have also been in the possession of others over time, including Warehouse 13.  This leads me to believe that Area 52 is connected to Warehouse 13.  An antarctic Area 52 also gets mentioned in the works of Simon R. Green.  This shouldn't be confused with three real Area 52s, in Utah, Nevada and Arkansas.  Another Area 52 is Stargate Command.  That may be one of the three in the Western United States.  Another western Area 52, perhaps one already mentioned, was visited by the Looney Tunes in Back in Action, and is central to a huge number of sci-fi crossovers that I have mentioned on other blog posts on this site as well as in my Horror Crossover Encyclopedia.  In the movie Zoom, Area 52 is actually located below Area 51, and is a training site for young super-heroes.  In Doctor Who, Area 52 are pyramids in Egypt.  Area 52 is also seen in Perfect Dark and Wolfenstein II:  The New Colussus.  The Army of Darkness comics also had an Area 52 in Antarctica... and I believe Stargate SG-1 did as well.



2002--GROOM LAKE--Kate is dying. She wants reassurance that there is life elsewhere in the Universe. She and Andy go to the one place that may hold the answers to her questions. Alien lights have been seen. Alien ships have been sighted. If she could only come into contact with these foreign forces!  2003--SCARY MOVIE 3--A grey alien poses as Michael Jackson.  The first Scary Movie had Squiggy from LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY as the school principle, so as ridiculous as the films are, they sort of fit in the TVCU.  The alien must have posed as Michael because Michael is an alien who has an in with the Men in Black.  In the later Robot Chicken sketch, it's revealed that this "White Michael Jackson" was created by the aliens as part of a plot to conquer Earth, an invasion that is played out in this film.  

2003--TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES--Area 51 appears in the 2003 series.  This is not the main TVCU version, which is featured in James Bojaciuk's post which you can find in the right hand column of this screen.  This is one of the divergent timelines as revealed from Turtles Forever, which reveals every version of the Turtles exist within a multiverse.  

2003--KIM POSSIBLE--"Rufus vs. Commodore Puddles"--Bad guys attempt to infiltrate Area 51.  At Area 51 is a smaller version of the ship from FORBIDDEN PLANET.  Forbidden Planet technically takes place in the future of the TVCU, but considering Robby the Robot from that film has appeared at Area 51 in Looney Tunes:  Back in Action, and previously appeared at an inventor's convention, along with H.G. Wells' Time Machine, in Gremlins, it's possible that Robby and the ship came back in time and was confiscated by Area 51.  

May 2002--ROSWELL--"Graduation"--In the final episode of Roswell, one of the half-alien characters crushes a piece of charcoal into a diamond and says he learned the trick from Superman. I suppose he could have met the real Man of Steel at some point during the series between episodes.

April 2005--ROBOT CHICKEN--"Badunkadunk"--Amidst the controversial trial regarding child molestation charges, it's revealed that the Michael Jackson on trial is not the real Michael Jackson.  This is "White Michael Jackson", a clone created by the Grey Aliens in 1984, part of their plans to conquer Earth.  This White Michael Jackson is battled by the real MIB Agent Michael Jackson, AKA Captain EO.  It appears that both are killed in this sketch, but of course Michael (the real one, I believe) does survive.  



2005--AREA 51--This is a first person shooter game taking place at Area 51 involving an alien prisoner escapee. From Matt Hickman, our gaming crossover expert: In Area 51 (2005 version) you run into Sharks with laser beams on their head and in the Fake Moon landing room part of the recorded Raido Messages is a Voice Saying . 2005 to Present--AMERICAN DAD--The family harbors a grey alien named Roger who dad and CIA agent Stan Smith rescued from Area 51.  Note that Grey Aliens appear a lot in fiction, and I've only included a sampling of relevant TVCU appearance.  I'm sure there are plenty more that exist that I've left out.  After a while, I stopped searching.  There is a discussion at the TVCU Facebook group that lists more which you can find here.

The Story: The Droods are a family that for a long time have been a force for good fighting supernatural evils. Edwin is one of the latest secret agent wizards, who finds himself cast out as a rogue and hunted by his own family.
Notes: The date setting is based on events from future novels and the Nightside series. Green connects all of his series within one larger mythology. One might wonder why I have Secret Histories listed in the Nightside entries as a non-horror cross but the Nightside series listed as a horror cross in the Secret Histories series. Edwin Drood is a wizard secret agent, and I don’t consider wizards as horror. They are more fantasy. Nightside exists in a pocket dimension cloaked in eternal darkness, where monsters walk around freely, so it’s more on the horror side. Both really straddle on the line of horror and non-horror, and I made a call. Having said all that, the Secret Histories series still has a large number of horror crosses, giving it a large presence in the Horror Universe nonetheless. This novel has three Lovecraft references. A patient at a hospital for supernatural conditions is the living embodiment of every mystical tome, including the Necronomicon. There is a rumor that the Old Ones are going to rise, to which Eddie’s friend Janissary Jane dismisses as a constant rumor that will never come to pass. The conspiracy against the Droods is linked to the Lurkers on the Threshold from the Lovecraft Mythos. One of Eddie’s enemies has a Kandarian possessing amulet. Kandarian demons are from the Evil Dead series. Eddie has a confrontation with someone who has taken the Hyde formula. Martian Red Weed is seen as a drug. This is from War of the Worlds. Eddie’s witch friend Molly Metcalf talks about the Arcadia Project that turns up again in the Nightside series. The Blue Fairy finds the puzzle box from the Hellraiser series. The Droods have a scalpel once owned by Baron Von Frankenstein. Based on its significance, I’m assuming they mean Victor and not another member of the Frankenstein family. Edwin’s name is a reference to Charles Dickens’ The Mystery of Edwin Drood, with a implied family connection. At a hospital for supernatural conditions, there is a time agent whose latest regeneration had gone terribly wrong, turning him inside out. Time agents are from the Doctor Who series, and so are Time Lords who regenerate. However, typically, Time Lords are not time agents, and in fact, the two groups do not care for each other. Perhaps this was a rogue Time Lord who was recruited by the time agents. Eddie has a confrontation with an android from the 23rd century’s Rossum’s Unionised Robots. This is from the play RUR. Eddie’s grandmother suggests that Eddie court Allice Little, who “lives in a world of her own and only comes out for mealtimes. Lots of mealtimes.” This is meant to be Alice Liddel, from Alice In Wonderland, but of course can’t be the same Alice from the original story. It may still be one of the Alices who has been to Wonderland. Girls name Alice have been drawn to Wonderland for a long time. Another suggested match is Penelope Creighton, who may be related to the character named Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward from Thunderbirds. Eddie mentions a time when he broke into Area 52 in the antarctic. This seems to be a reference to the Image Comics series. The drug taduki is from the Allan Quatermain series. Vril Power, Inc. is behind the conspiracy against the Droods. Vril power is from the Coming Race. Eddie compares a trip through the sewers to the explorers who took the Journey to the Center of the Earth and to Cave Carson. The Blue Fairy also finds a stuffed Moomintroll and the Maltese Falcon. Eddie and Molly when choosing the form of their weapon, have the choice of the Holy Hand Grenade of St. Antioch. At Drood Hall is a scrimshaw carved apparently from Moby Dick.

DEC - While on a "Good Will" PR mission to provide security for reality tv star Lauren Conrad, Ivan and Misty investigate a possible Skunk Ape or other cryptid in the Florida Everglades causing damage to a local Hangar 18 installation (and dine at a local Bubba Gump restaurant). Though they find plenty of hostile wildlife, nothing explains the attacks until they uncover criminal activity, and have to face a nearly unstoppable brute named Zbigniew Krycsiwiki working for an unidentified foreign agency. An explosion wipes out all evidence of any international espionage against the United States, and the assignment is considered a failure for the duo.

Lauren Conrad appeared on Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County(2004-2006) and The Hills (2006-2009) reality tv shows on MTV as herself. The skunk ape is a hominid cryptid that can allegedly be found in swamplands of the American south east, and has been reported by Loren Coleman in his 1999 book The Field Guide to Bigfoot, Yeti, and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide. Hangar 18 is a designation for any building assigned for Ordnance use on a government or military 

base, based on UFOlogy lore of the Hangar 18 on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in

It’s mentioned that the War of the Worlds Martians once attempted to invade the Nightside. The Tower of London is guarded by SAS Combat Sorcerers, who come from the Gravel series. There is an appearance of two of Pickman’s paintings from Lovecraft’s Pickman’s Model. There is a mummified Monkey’s Paw. A puzzle box (from the Hellraiser series) appears. There was a factory in Cuba using Frankenstein monsters as slave labor. Later, several of the monsters are seen doing karaoke in the Nightside. A representative of Vril Power, Inc. appears. There is also a representative from MI13. This agency comes from the Excalibur comic from Marvel Comics. Eddie Drood is familiar with the existence of Oz. Shadows Fall is mentioned and indicated to exist in the far future of the Green Universe. However, many Green stories also have Shadows Fall interacting with other realms in the present and Shadows Fall is a reality of characters who are imaginary in the “real world”. In fact, Shadows Fall may be the same realm also called the Land of Fiction and Imaginationland. Likely time is irrelevant in that realm and exists in all times at once in relation to the Horror Universe. One of the Droods mentions Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie. Jeannie’s cousin, from the animated Jeannie, has previously crossed with Scooby-Doo in the New Scooby-Doo Movies. The Travelling Doctor is mentioned. Doctor Who? The Wolf of Kabul is also mentioned. He is a character from a military themed comic of the same name. There’s another reference to Green’s favorite thing, the Maltese Falcon. There is an appearance of the Painting that Devoured Paris from Grant Morrison’s run on the Doom Patrol. A stuffed Morlock appears. Eddie is familiar with the talking beavers of Narnia. Eddie’s ally Honey wonders why the Lone Ranger really used silver bullets, implying that Tonto knew of their use against the supernatural. Area 52 is mentioned. There is a reference to a U.S. government project training soldiers to be psychics, including walking through walls and knocking over goats. This is a reference to the film The Men Who Stare at Goats. Eddie has a history with the elf Peaseblossom from A Midsummer’s Nights Dream. The Droods keep watch over Crouch End Towen from Stephen King’s Crouch End. The Nightside’s Walker uses a sword cane which he claims to be a British spy tradition. Of course he’s referring to John Steed of the Avengers. Eddie Drood went to Roswell in Simon Green’s The Spy Who Haunted Me.

The Story: The storyline of this season is an ongoing arc, so this is one tiny bit of the overall story. In this episode, the team has to rescue all the aliens captured by Aggregor, the bad guy.

Notes: Professor Paradox mentions having to deal with issues “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” Clearly he is referring to the setting of Star Wars. The Professor has adventures in time and space, as a time traveler, and is clearly inspired by Doctor Who. However, this is not the Doctor. Paradox was an Earth human working at Area 51 in the 1950s, who created a hole in time and space, and accidentally found himself thrown into the event horizon, where he was trapped there for a thousand years, going insane and then sane again. He now travels through time and space fixing history.

May 2, 2011--ZERO DARK THIRTY--ZERO DARK THIRTY, the movie about the defeat of Osama bin Laden, claims the US Special Forces used technology borrowed from AREA 51 to sneak into enemy territory.

Notes: An auction is selling a Martian Tripod and a Crystal Egg. This novel has several references to Green’s Nightside series. An auction attendee is Aunt Sally Darque, who was banned from every coven in Europe after that nasty affair at the dance academy in the German Black Forest. This is a reference to the film Suspiria. The Carnacki Institute is mentioned. Doctor Faustus is former owner of the Apocalypse Door. Archie Leech’s Kandarian Amulet is mentioned. The immortals are residing in Castle Frankenstein. The Droods are assisted by the Bride of Frankenstein and several other Frankenstein Monsters in taking the castle. In the Antarctic, Eddie sees a bizarre alien city within a mountain. This is likely a reference to At the Mountains of Madness, considering Green’s habit of throwing in a Lovecraft reference in every story. The war is compared to the rivalry between UNCLE and THRUSH or between James Bond and SPECTRE. Green also references his other series, Shadows Fall, a few times. At Drood Hall, there are several 19th century family members still alive because their aging was slowed during the Time War. Yes, Whovians, it’s likely that Time War, considering that Green tends to throw in at least one Doctor Who reference in each of his stories. Isabella Metcalf is compared to Indiana Jones. Jeannie (of I Dream of…) is listed among the immortals. There is a dead dragon under Castle Frankenstein, perhaps a reference to the Solomon Kane adventure, The Dragon of Castle Frankenstein. Eddie and Molly travel to Area 52 to stop the villain.

2011--PAUL--In the movie Paul, the grey alien is pursued by the Men in Black, and in flashback to when he was held by the government in 1980, he is held captive in the same warehouse that held the Ark of the Covenant and the Grey Alien from the Indiana Jones films.  The MIB in PAUL are not the same type of MIB in the MIB film series, though. Naturally they can be conflated, but there seems to be a LOT of stronger connections in PAUL, such as the idea in film that E.T. was based on a meeting between Paul and Steven Spielberg.  and Wayne Szalinski's Shrink ray.



2011--51--51 chronicles what happens after political pressure from the American public forces the Air Force to provide a few well-known reporters with limited access to the most secretive base on the planet: Area 51. When one of the base's hidden 'long term visitors' exploits this unprecedented visit as a chance to liberate himself and his fellow alien captives, Area 51 turns from a secure government base to a horrifying destination of terror.

NOV - Janos Schablotski adds a dragon skull to the trophy room aboard the Escapade. Already included are remains from a grey alien, a homunculus, and a cyclops. Parts of these creatures were used to fashion weapons and attire Janos uses in extradimensional travel. Adam Kennedy, on the other hand, has taken to wearing a Moogle suit when traveling worlds, which often gets him preferential treatment from the locals (and mocking treatment from the rest of the crew).

The Grey Alien is a type seen in Whitley Strieber's book COMMUNION(1987). The cyclops skull matches the anatomy of a Harryhausen Cyclops as seen in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958). The tiny homonculus is a creation of Dr. Praetorius as seen in THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935). The Moogle Suit (as well as the moogle race) is from the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises, appearing first in the 1992 game FINAL FANTASY V.

The Story: In this second infestation, it’s not zombies but horrors from Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos who travel through time and space to menace our heroes.
Notes: Like the first Infestation, this one takes place in multiple time periods and alternate realities. The Lovecraftian horrors are multiversal but originate from the Horror Universe. This story brings 30 Days of Night into the Horror Multiverse, but there isn’t evidence provided in this story to place it in the Horror Universe. However, because 30 Days of Night has crossed with X-Files, which is in the Horror Universe, we can conclude that 30 Days of Night is indeed in the Horror Universe. As stated in the entry for the first Infestation, there is evidence that G.I. Joe and the Transformers are in the Horror Multiverse, but not necessarily in the Horror Universe, though the later IDW crossover event X-Files: Conspiracy will add this version of Transformers to the main Horror Universe timeline. Dungeons & Dragons exists on other planets within the Horror Universe. Groom Lake is an alien conspiracy series. It’s possible that it exists in the Horror Universe, but it’s not definite. It is in the Horror Multiverse for sure. Bat Boy is a character from the rag Weekly World News. This does not necessarily bring in all the articles of that newspaper. Like the other crosses, it is definitely in the Horror Multiverse, but not necessarily in the Horror Universe. As for the Turtles, the animated film Turtles Forever has demonstrated that all the different versions of the Turtles, including the comic book version seen in this crossover, are part of the same multiverse, which for our purposes is the Horror Multiverse. IDW’s later crossover X-Files: Conspiracy will prove that this version of the Turtles are in the main Horror Universe. Infes2ation # 1 - 2 are only the bookends of the crossover. Summer 2015--BE COOL, SCOOBY-DOO--"Area 51 Adjacent"--BE COOL SCOOBY-DOO has an episode atArea 53, in Roswell.  I was unaware of Be Cool Scooby-Doo until now. Looking at the premise, even though it's a different artistic style and tone, it still fits in nicely with the ending of Mystery Incorporated, since it takes place with them travelling in the summer after graduation.  However, it probably takes place in a new alternate Scooby timeline.  

November 25, 2017--As of this date, “Ivan has never been to Roswell.”  But has Mike Nero?



2052--DEUS EX--Deus Ex features the grey aliens as the product of genetic engineering, made from DNA sampled from the Roswell crash.  Greys turn up in a lot of fiction. There's no reason there can't be more than one race that looks like that; just look at how many sci fi races are out there that look like humans.

2208--Futurama--"A Clone Of My Own"--To get around relativity, scientists increase the speed of light.  Note that all existing light continues to move at its original slow pace (otherwise the plot of "When Aliens Attack" falls apart, if nothing else), and that it is never explicitly stated that the scientists in question are from Earth.  This is the reason why intergalactic travel is possible in the Futurama universe. Thus, this event probably marks the beginning of real interstellar travel on the part of humanity - and, conjecturally, every other species in the Futurama universe. As a result, first contact between humans and extraterrestrials is quite likely to have occurred almost immediately after this. Read on.  Intergalactic travel by any species before this date has not been depicted onscreen. "Roswell That Ends Well" may provide a counterexample but maybe the 1947 end of the temporal wormhole opened up very near to Earth, who knows?  If we assume that those scientists were not from Earth, it does not contradict the work of Zephram Cochrane, nor should be not rule out discovery of faster than light travel already being discovered by many alien races already, as well as the use of wormholes to travel through space.  Thus we don't have to use this statement to discount all the other appearances of space travel in the TVCU.

2200s--Futurama--"A Fishful Of Dollars"--The Decapodians arrive on Earth.  I hypothesise that this occurred shortly after the lightspeed increase in 2208, at which point humanity was probably contacted by every other spacefaring race in the universe more or less simultaneously. Certainly, this is the earliest given example of official contact between humans and aliens ("Roswell That Ends Well" and Nibbler's presence on Earth in "The Why Of Fry" notwithstanding).  (And discounting alien contact that was kept from the public, which happened a lot in prior centuries.)

2258--BABYLON 5--"Grail"--A man sue a grey alien because the man's grandfather had been abducted by the grey alien's grandfather.

INDEPENDENCE DAY--In the novelization, Daniel Jackson (of Stargate SG-1) is one of the scientists studying the captured UFO at Area 51.  Independence Day, which must be a divergent timeline, also has a mention of Dr. Katz, who is the noted animated celebrity shrink from his own series and from numerous other crossovers.  See my Offspring of Zed post on the right hand column for more on Doctor Katz.
